Water Pump Replacement 6.6L

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1729415  Size: SH
  1. Remove the thermostat bypass pipes. Refer to Thermostat Bypass Pipes Replacement.
  2. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
  3. Remove the water pump to water pump outlet pipe nuts (2).

  4. Object Number: 1999392  Size: SH
  5. Remove the water pump nuts/bolts.
  6. Note the location of the bolts. The bolts are different lengths.

  7. Remove the water pump.
  8. Remove and discard the water pump O-ring and the water pump outlet pipe gasket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1999392  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the water pump O-ring with engine oil.
  2. Install the water pump outlet pipe gasket and water pump O-ring.
  3. Install the water pump.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the water pump nuts/bolts. Ensure the correct length bolt is used in the proper location.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts/bolts to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  7. Install the water pump to water pump outlet pipe nuts (2).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  9. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
  10. Install the thermostat bypass pipes. Refer to Thermostat Bypass Pipes Replacement.

Water Pump Replacement LU3

Tools Required

J 41240 Fan Clutch Remover and Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement .
  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  4. Remove the cooling fan.
  5. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  6. Object Number: 367001  Size: SH
  7. Reposition the radiator outlet hose clamps at the surge tank and water pump.
  8. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the surge tank.
  9. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the water pump.

  10. Object Number: 182853  Size: SH
  11. Reposition the water pump inlet hose clamps.
  12. Remove the water pump inlet hose.

  13. Object Number: 317191  Size: SH
  14. Using J 41240 to hold the water pump pulley, remove the water pump pulley bolts.

  15. Object Number: 188054  Size: SH
  16. Remove the water pump bolts.
  17. Remove the water pump.
  18. Remove and discard the water pump gaskets.
  19. Clean and inspect the water pump, if necessary. Refer to Water Pump Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 188054  Size: SH
  1. If reusing the fasteners, apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480), or equivalent to the threads of the water pump bolts.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install NEW water pump gaskets and the water pump.
  4. Install the water pump bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  6. Using J 41240 to hold the water pump pulley, install the water pump pulley bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).


    Object Number: 182853  Size: SH

    Important: After assembly, the hose clamp tangs (water pump end) must point forward and the upper tang should be level with the outside diameter of the water pump inlet hose.

  8. Install the water pump inlet hose.
  9. Position the water pump inlet hose clamps.

  10. Object Number: 367001  Size: SH
  11. Install the radiator outlet hose to the water pump.
  12. Install the radiator outlet hose to the surge tank.
  13. Position the radiator outlet hose clamps at the surge tank and water pump.
  14. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  15. Install the cooling fan.
  16. Install the air cleaner outlet resonator duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement .
  17. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  18. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  19. Inspect the cooling system for leaks.

Water Pump Replacement 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L Engine

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  3. Remove the fan clutch.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory .

  5. Object Number: 659418  Size: SH
  6. Reposition the inlet hose clamp at the water pump.
  7. Remove the inlet hose from the water pump.

  8. Object Number: 659509  Size: SH
  9. Reposition the outlet hose clamp at the water pump.
  10. Remove the outlet hose from the water pump.

  11. Object Number: 660665  Size: SH
  12. Reposition the heater inlet hose clamp at the water pump.
  13. Remove the heater inlet hose from the water pump.

  14. Object Number: 260121  Size: SH
  15. Remove the water pump bolts.
  16. Remove the water pump and gaskets.
  17. Discard the water pump gaskets.

Installation Procedure

Important: All gaskets surfaces are to be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly.

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 260121  Size: SH
  1. Install the water pump and NEW gaskets.
  2. Install the water pump bolts.
  3. Tighten

    1. Tighten the water pump bolts a first pass to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the water pump bolts a final pass to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  4. Install the heater inlet hose to the water pump.
  5. Position the heater inlet hose clamp at the water pump.

  6. Object Number: 659509  Size: SH
  7. Install the outlet hose to the water pump.
  8. Position the outlet hose clamp at the water pump.

  9. Object Number: 659418  Size: SH
  10. Install the inlet hose to the water pump.
  11. Position the inlet hose clamp at the water pump.
  12. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory .
  13. Install the fan blade and clutch assembly.
  14. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  15. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
