Power Steering Pump Replacement 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 828823  Size: SH
  1. Place a drain pan below under the vehicle.
  2. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement .
  3. Remove the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
  4. Disconnect the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.

  6. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  7. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  8. Disconnect the reservoir outlet hose from the power steering pump through the wheel well.

  9. Object Number: 829005  Size: SH
  10. Disconnect the power steering gear outlet hose or cooler hose the power steering pump through the wheel well.

  11. Object Number: 309298  Size: SH
  12. Disconnect the power brake booster inlet hose (2) from the power steering pump through the wheel well.
  13. Cap the ends of the hose and the pump in order to prevent the entrance of dirt.
  14. Lower the vehicle.

  15. Object Number: 828911  Size: SH
  16. Remove the rear power steering pump mounting bolt.
  17. Remove the front power steering pump mounting bolts.
  18. Remove the power steering pump from the vehicle.

  19. Object Number: 828903  Size: SH
  20. Remove the power steerting pump rear bracket mounting nuts.
  21. Remove the power steering pump rear bracket from the power steering pump.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 828903  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering pump rear bracket to the power steering pump.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the power steering pump rear bracket mounting nuts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the power steering pump to the vehicle.
  6. Install the front power steering pump mounting bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the rear power steering pump mounting bolt.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

  10. Uncap the power steering hoses.

  11. Object Number: 309298  Size: SH
  12. Raise the vehicle.
  13. Important: Route the power steering hoses in the same location in which they were removed.

  14. Install the power brake booster inlet hose (2) to the power steering pump through the wheel well.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the hose fitting to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  16. Install the power steering gear outlet hose or cooler hose to the power steering pump through the wheel well.

  17. Object Number: 829013  Size: SH
  18. Install the reservoir outlet hose to the power steering pump through the wheel well.
  19. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  20. Lower the vehicle.

  21. Object Number: 828823  Size: SH
  22. Connect the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  23. Install the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 61 N·m (45 lb ft).

  25. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement .
  26. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  27. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.

Power Steering Pump Replacement 4.3L

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 829013  Size: SH
  1. Place a drain pan below under the vehicle.
  2. Remove the power steering pump pulley . Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement .
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Disconnect the reservoir outlet hose from the power steering pump through the wheel well.

  5. Object Number: 829005  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the power steering gear outlet hose or cooler hose from the power steering pump through the wheel well.

  7. Object Number: 309298  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the power brake booster inlet hose (2) from the power steering pump (1) through the wheel well.
  9. Cap the ends of the hose and the power steering pump in order to prevent the entrance of dirt.

  10. Object Number: 828989  Size: SH
  11. Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts and the nuts.
  12. Remove the power steering pump from the vehicle.

  13. Object Number: 828987  Size: SH
  14. Remove the power steering pump rear bracket mounting nuts.
  15. Remove the power steering pump rear bracket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 828987  Size: SH
  1. Install the rear bracket to the power steering pump.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the power steering pump rear bracket mounting nuts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).


    Object Number: 828989  Size: SH
  5. Install the power steering pump to the vehicle.
  6. Install the power steering pump front mounting bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the power steering pump lower and rear nuts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

  10. Uncap the power steering hoses.

  11. Object Number: 309298  Size: SH

    Important: Route the power steering hoses in the same location in which they were removed.

  12. Install the power brake booster inlet hose (2) to the power steering pump through the wheel well.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the hose fitting to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  14. Install the power steering gear outlet hose or cooler hose to the power steering pump through the wheel well.

  15. Object Number: 829013  Size: SH
  16. Install the reservoir outlet hose to the power steering pump through the wheel well.
  17. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement .
  18. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  19. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
