Displays Test

Certain instrument panel cluster (IPC) features are tested when the ignition is turned on in order to verify the features are working properly. The following illuminate briefly or flash upon key up:

    • The ABS indicator
    • The AIR BAG indicator
    • The BRAKE indicator
    • The charge indicator
    • The CHECK GAGES indicator
    • The fasten safety belt indicator
Illuminates for 20 seconds followed by 55 seconds of flashing when the drivers seatbelt is unfastened.
    • The SECURITY indicator
    • The SERVICE ENGINE SOON (MIL) indicator
Remains on until the engine is started.

Indicators and Warning Messages

Refer to Indicator/Warning Message Description and Operation .

Engine Coolant Temperature Gage

The engine coolant temperature gage displays the engine coolant temperature based on information from the engine coolant temperature sensor. The IPC receives a direct hardwire input from the engine coolant temperature sensor in order to display an engine coolant temperature level on the engine coolant temperature gage.

Engine Oil Pressure Gage

The engine oil pressure gage displays the engine oil pressure based on information from the engine oil pressure gage sensor. The IPC receives a direct hardwire input from the engine oil pressure gage sensor in order to display an engine oil pressure level on the engine oil pressure gage.

Fuel Gage

Gas

The fuel gage displays the fuel level as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a direct hardwire input from the PCM indicating the fuel level percent. The fuel gage defaults to empty if the PCM detects a malfunction in the fuel level circuit.

Diesel

The fuel gage displays the fuel level as determined by the fuel sender buffer module. The IPC receives a direct hardwire input from the fuel sender buffer module indicating the fuel level percent. The fuel gage defaults to empty if the fuel sender buffer module detects a malfunction in the fuel level circuit.

Odometer

The IPC contains a season odometer and a trip odometer. Momentarily pressing the trip/reset switch on the IPC will toggle between the season odometer and the trip odometer. In order to reset the trip odometer, press the trip/reset switch for greater than 2 seconds while the trip odometer is displayed. The IPC displays the vehicle mileage and trip mileage as determined by the IPC. The IPC calculates the mileage based on the vehicle speed signal circuit from the PCM, for gas engines, or from the vehicle speed sensor buffer, for diesel engines. The odometer will display 'error' if an internal IPC memory failure is detected.

PRNDL Display

The IPC displays the selected gear position as determined by the PRNDL circuit board. The PRNDL circuit board receives a combination of 2-4 grounded inputs from the park/neutral position switch indicating the gear position. The TRANS 10 ampere fuse supplies voltage to the PRNDL circuit board via the OFF/RUN/CRANK voltage circuit.

Speedometer

Gas

The IPC displays the vehicle speed based on the information from the PCM. The PCM converts the data from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) into a 4000 pulses/mile signal. The IPC uses the vehicle speed signal circuit from the PCM in order to calculate the vehicle speed.

Diesel

The IPC displays the vehicle speed based on the information from the vehicle speed sensor buffer. The vehicle speed sensor buffer converts the analog signal from the VSS into a 4000 pulses/mile signal. The IPC uses the vehicle speed signal circuit from the vehicle speed sensor buffer in order to calculate the vehicle speed.

Voltmeter

The voltmeter displays the vehicle system voltage level. The IPC uses the ignition 1 voltage circuit in order to display a voltage level on the voltmeter.
