For 1990-2009 cars only
  1. Remove the hush panel under the steering column.
  2. Important: Ensure to differentiate between the 3-Way PASS-Key® Connector and the yellow 2-Way SIR Connector. The 3-Way PASS-Key® Connector has PPL/WHT and WHT/BLK wires.

  3. Disconnect the three-cavity PASS-Key® connector at the base of the steering column. Connect the male and the female connectors to the mating connectors on the pigtails from the J 35628-A Interrogator and adapter J 35628-210 or equivalent.
  4. Insert the customer's Ignition Key into the ignition switch lock cylinder.
  5. Press the On-Off Switch on the Interrogator to the ON position.
  6. Rotate the ignition lock cylinder while the key is inserted to insure that the correct code is read in all positions. The window above the key code reader indicates the electrical code for the key (1 to 15) or indicates E for error.
  7. If the code is correct in all positions, the lock cylinder is functioning properly.
  8. Obtain a spare key or make a replacement key if the code is correct only in some positions. Refer to Programming Replacement Keys, Ignition Cylinder, or Powertrain Control Module .
  9. Read the code again. Compare the displayed code to the following conditions:
  10. • A correct code indicates that the original key is defective.
    • An incorrect code indicates a defective lock cylinder.
  11. Insert the customer's ignition key in the Key Code Reading on the J 35628-A Interrogator to check the customer's ignition key. Compare the displayed code to the following conditions:
  12. Important: The J 35628 Interrogator (old style) requires the use of the J 35628-95 Adapter to correctly read PASS-Key® codes on double side cut keys.

    • Replace the key with a spare key or use the replacement key if the Interrogator indicates E.
    • Replace the Lock Cylinder if the Interrogator shows the electrical code (1 to 15).
