DIFFICULT TO SHIFT TO REVERSE OR SECOND GEAR

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1990 CHEVEROLET BERETTA GTZ W/2.3L (VIN CODE A)

Condition:

On the 1990 Beretta GTZ with 2.3L (VIN Code A) engine, the engine wire harness just above the shift cables may come out of its mounting bracket, and fall into the shift cables. Under some conditions, the interference could make it difficult to shift into either reverse or second gear.

The hole in the bracket is too large to retain the clip in the wire harness (see illustration). The plant has been securing the harness to the bracket since VIN LY155208, and a revised bracket with the correct hole size will be in production shortly.

Correction:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Secure the wire harness to the bracket with a tie strap, in the area shown in the illustration. Make sure that the transmission shifts without interference.

3. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
