INTERMITTENT HORN BLOWING IN COLD WEATHER (SERVICE PROC.)

Subject: INTERMITTENT HORN BLOWING IN COLD WEATHER

Model and Year: 1987-90 CORSICA AND BERETTA ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition:

---------- Horn may blow when car is cold on some 1987-90 L cars.

Cause:

------ This condition may be caused by excessive shrinkage of the horn pad vinyl when cold. This forces the horn pad contact plates together which activates the horn. This condition is more prevalent with darker (blue or black) horn pads.

Correction:

----------- To repair this condition use the following procedure.

1. Remove steering pad from steering wheel.

2. Peel edge of horn pad back to remove the vinyl skin.

3. Carefully trim approximately 24 mm from each end of the upper contact plate (see attached diagram).

a. Lift up the corner slightly.

b. Trim the contact plate with tin snips taking care not to break the heat stakes (melted plastic nibs which retain the upper metal contact plate).

Note: If a heat stake does break, replacement is not necessary.

4. Reinstall vinyl skin and horn pad to steering wheel.

Use existing Labor Operation and Labor Time.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
