J 43653 Flywheel Holding Tool

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the air outlet duct hose, the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose, and the intake plenum as an assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  3. Remove the engine control module (ECM). Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement .
  4. Remove the transmission control module (TCM). Refer to Transmission Control Module Replacement .
  5. Remove the underhood electrical junction block. Refer to Underhood Electrical Center or Junction Block Bracket Replacement .

  7. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness from the transaxle and the park/neutral position (PNP) switch.

  9. Disconnect the shift cable from the shift linkage.
  10. Disconnect the cable from the bracket.
  11. Disconnect the engine ground wires at the engine block.

  13. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts and stud.
  14. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture for the 2.2L (L 61) engine.
  15. Remove the left transmission mount bolts.
  16. Remove the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement .
  17. Disconnect the wheel drive shafts from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .

  19. Remove the 2 bolts from the transmission brace.

  20. Object Number: 510441  Size: SH
  21. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
  22. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  23. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
  24. Use the J 43653 to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

  26. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  27. Remove the transmission cooler lines by removing the nut holding the bracket to the transaxle case.

  29. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) wiring harness from the sensor.
  30. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.

  32. Remove the transaxle to engine bolts.
  33. Separate the engine and the transaxle.
  34. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  35. If installing a replacement transmission, transfer all necessary parts.
  36. Flush the transmission cooler and lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the PNP switch.
  2. Install the shifter cable bracket.
  3. Install the lower transmission to engine stud.
  4. Install the transmission mount.

  6. Position the transaxle in the vehicle.
  7. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  8. Install the lower transmission to engine bolts and nuts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts and nuts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  10. Connect the transaxle cooler pipes to the transaxle.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the cooler pipes to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  12. Use the J 43653 to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

  13. Object Number: 475919  Size: SH
  14. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the torque converter bolts to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  16. Install the wheel drive shafts to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  17. Remove the transaxle jack.

  19. Connect the wiring harness to the VSS.

  20. Object Number: 510441  Size: SH
  21. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  22. Install the flywheel inspection cover bolts.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  24. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts and stud.
  25. Tighten
    Tighten all of the bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  26. Install the transmission to engine brace bolts.
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 72 N·m (53 lb ft).

  28. Install the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement .
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30. Install the transaxle mount to body bolts.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  32. Remove the engine support fixture.
  33. Install the engine wiring harness grounds to the transaxle to engine mount stud and nut.
  34. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  35. Install the shift linkage to the transmission.

  37. Connect the electrical connectors to the PNP switch and transaxle.
  38. Install the underhood electrical junction block. Refer to Underhood Electrical Center or Junction Block Bracket Replacement .
  39. Install the TCM. Refer to Transmission Control Module Replacement .
  40. Install the ECM. Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement .
  41. Install the air outlet duct hose, PCV hose, and the intake plenum. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  42. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  43. Inspect the transmission fluid level.
  44. Important: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.

    Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the ECM, powertrain control module (PCM), or TCM will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.

  45. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Transmission Adaptive Functions .
