Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement RPO L61

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  2. Object Number: 746055  Size: SH
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.

  4. Object Number: 789955  Size: SH
  5. Remove the bolts that secure the thermostat housing to the water pump feed pipe.

  6. Object Number: 789956  Size: SH
  7. Remove the feed pipe.

  8. Object Number: 951651  Size: SH
  9. Remove the thermostat and retaining sleeve, noting the orientation for installation.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 951651  Size: SH
  1. Install the thermostat and retaining sleeve with the dimple placed into the housing slot.

  2. Object Number: 789956  Size: SH

    Important: Lubricate the O-ring with soapy water or coolant before installing the O-ring in the water pump.

  3. Install the feed pipe that connects the thermostat housing to the water pump.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 789955  Size: SH
  5. Install the bolt that secures the water pump feed pipe.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (18 lb in).


    Object Number: 746055  Size: SH
  7. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  9. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1381548  Size: SH
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the hoses from the thermostat housing cap.
  3. Remove the thermostat housing cap and bolts.
  4. Remove the thermostat.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1381548  Size: SH
  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the thermostat housing cap bolts and cap.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (18 lb in).

  5. Install the hoses to the thermostat housing cap.
  6. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
