J 21366 Converter Holding Strap

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 647997  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  3. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  4. Remove the transmission mount nuts.

  6. Remove the transmission support bolts/nuts.
  7. Raise the transmission slightly and remove the transmission support from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the exhaust pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  9. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  10. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  11. Remove the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  12. • Transfer Case - BW 4481 - NR3 Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Driveline/Axle
    • Transfer Case - BW 4482 - NR4 Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Driveline/Axle
    • Transfer Case - NVG 246 - NP8 Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Driveline/Axle

  13. Remove the transmission mount bolts and mount.

  14. Object Number: 858985  Size: SH
  15. Ensure the transmission manual shaft is positioned in mechanical park.
  16. Remove the retainer that secures the cable to the bracket.

  18. Remove the range selector cable end (2) from the transmission range selector lever ball stud (1).
  19. Depress the tangs and remove the cable from the bracket.

  21. Remove the exhaust hanger bracket bolts and bracket.

  23. Remove the harness clip (1) from the fuel line bracket.
  24. Disconnect the park/neutral position (PNP) switch electrical connectors (2).

  26. Disconnect the main electrical connector (1).
  27. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector (2).

  29. Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.

  31. Remove the torque converter bolts.

  33. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Quick-Connect Fitting Disconnection and Connection .
  34. Plug the transmission oil cooler line fittings.

  36. Remove the fuel feed/return and evaporative emission (EVAP) return pipe bracket nut.

  37. Object Number: 859004  Size: SH
  38. Remove the lower right transmission bolt and stud.

  39. Object Number: 859003  Size: SH
  40. Remove the remaining transmission studs and bolt.
  41. Install the J 21366 onto the transmission in order to retain the torque converter.
  42. Pull the transmission straight back.
  43. Remove the transmission from the vehicle while simultaneously removing the fluid level indicator tube.
  44. Install the J 21366 to the bellhousing in order to retain the torque converter.
  45. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines if necessary. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 859003  Size: SH
  1. Raise the transmission into place while simultaneously installing the fluid indicator tube.
  2. Remove the J 21366 .
  3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.
  4. The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install transmission studs and bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt/studs to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the lower right transmission stud and bolt.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt/stud to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Install the fuel feed/return and EVAP return pipe bracket nut.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  11. Remove the plugs from the transmission oil cooler line fittings.
  12. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Quick-Connect Fitting Disconnection and Connection .

  14. If reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the bolt threads and apply LOCTITE™ 242 GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489), or equivalent to the threads prior to installation.
  15. Install the torque converter bolts.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).

  17. Install the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  19. Connect the VSS electrical connector (2).
  20. Connect the main electrical connector (1).

  21. Object Number: 858995  Size: SH
  22. Connect the PNP switch electrical connectors (2).
  23. Install the harness clip (1) to the fuel line bracket.

  24. Object Number: 858548  Size: SH
  25. Install the exhaust hanger bracket and bolts.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  27. Install the cable to the bracket.
  28. Install the range selector cable end (2) to the transmission range selector lever ball stud (1).

  29. Object Number: 858985  Size: SH
  30. Ensure the transmission manual shaft is positioned in mechanical park.
  31. Install the retainer that secures the cable to the bracket.

  32. Object Number: 858996  Size: SH
  33. Install the transmission mount and bolts.
  34. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  35. Install the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  36. • Transfer Case - BW 4481 - NR3 Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
    • Transfer Case - BW 4482 - NR4 Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
    • Transfer Case - NVG 246 - NP8 Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Driveline/Axle.
  37. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  38. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  39. Install the exhaust pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  40. Object Number: 702036  Size: SH
  41. Raise the transmission slightly and install the transmission support.
  42. Install the transmission support bolts/nuts.
  43. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts/nuts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).

  44. Install the transmission mount nuts.
  45. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  46. Remove the support from the transmission.
  47. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  48. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  49. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® VI transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
  50. Important: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.

    Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, The ECM, PCM or TCM will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.

  51. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Transmission Adaptive Functions .
