Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 41427 Universal Lift Brackets

Notice: If the engine is damaged internally and a new engine assembly is installed in the vehicle, flush all foreign material from the cooling system and the oil cooler system. Severe engine damage may occur if debris is not removed.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable assembly from the battery negative terminal. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Sheet Metal.
  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling the Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner (Assembly) in Engine Controls.
  5. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  6. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Remove the heater hoses at the engine. Refer to Heater Hose Replacement in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  8. Remove the accelerator and cruise control cables (if equipped).
  9. Remove the air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to Compressor in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  10. Remove the generator and bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  11. Remove the engine wiring harness from the engine.
  12. Remove the fuel lines from the intake at the rear of the block. Refer to Fuel Hose and Pipes in Engine Controls.
  13. Remove the vacuum lines.
  14. Raise the vehicle.
  15. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
  16. Drain the engine oil.
  17. Remove the exhaust pipes from the manifolds. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  18. Remove the strut rods at the engine mountings.
  19. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  20. Remove the torque converter bolts (if equipped).
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Support the transmission. Do not support under the transmission oil pan.

  24. Attach the J 41427 to the left front and right rear intake manifold mounting bolts, using the following procedures:
  25. 23.1. Disconnect the spark plug wires.
    23.2. Remove the distributor cap. Distributor Removal .
    23.3. Remove the right rear lower intake manifold bolts.
    23.4. Install the J 41427 marked RIGHT REAR.
    23.5. Install the retaining bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    23.6. Remove the air conditioning compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
    23.7. Remove the accessory drive bracket. Refer to Engine Cooling.
    23.8. Disconnect the EGR tube from the intake manifold.
    23.9. Remove the left front lower intake manifold bolts.
    23.10. Install the J 41427 marked LEFT FRONT with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine.
    23.11. Install the retaining bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  26. Attach a suitable lifting device to the lift brackets.
  27. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
  28. Remove the front engine mounting to frame bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  29. Remove the engine.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine to the vehicle.
  2. • Disconnect the J 41427 and lifting device.
    • Reinstall the intake manifold bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

    • Raise the vehicle.
    • Support the vehicle with safety stands.
  3. Install the front engine mounting to frame bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  4. Install the transmission to engine bolts. Refer to Transmission.
  5. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts (if equipped). Refer to Transmission
  6. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement in Engine Electrical
  7. Install the strut rods at the engine mountings.
  8. Install the exhaust pipes to the manifolds. Refer to Exhaust Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Install the vacuum lines.
  11. Install the fuel lines. Refer to Fuel Hose and Pipes in Engine Controls.
  12. Install the engine wiring harness.
  13. Install the generator and bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  14. Install the air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to A/C Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  15. Connect the EGR tube to the intake manifold.
  16. Install the accelerator and cruise control cables (if equipped).
  17. Install the heater hoses. Refer to Heater Hose Replacement in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  18. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  19. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  20. Install the air cleaner. Refer to Air Cleaner (Assembly) in Engine Controls.
  21. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Sheet Metal.
  22. Install the proper quantity and grade of engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Engine Oil Filter Change in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  23. Install the proper quantity and grade of coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  24. Connect the battery negative cable assembly to the battery negative terminal.
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
