Model and Year: 1985-89 C, K, R, V, G, P TRUCKS WITH 6.2L (VIN CODE J AND C) ENGINES

THIS BULLETIN CANCELS AND SUPERSEDES DEALER SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 89-248-6, DATED DECEMBER 1988. DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN REFERENCED, AS WELL AS A CHANGE MADE IN THE SECOND PARAGRAPH. ALL COPIES OF 89-248-6 SHOULD BE DISCARDED.

Some 1985-89 C, K, R, V, G and P-trucks with a 6.2L diesel engine may experience a "no start" condition when cold.

The electronic glow plug controller, P/N 12052153 (color coded black), may be responsible for a no start condition.

If a no start condition exists, refer to the diagnostic procedure listed in Dealer Service Bulletin #88-49, dated October 1987. Should a new glow plug controller be required, based on your diagnosis, the following controller should be used.

The new controller, P/N 12088520 (color coded grey), is being released with improved circuit board components to address no start difficulty.

Part is currently available from GMSPO.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
