Circuit/System Description

The high voltage crash impact detection (HVCID) sensor utilizes a unidirectional 2-wire circuit. The HVCID modulates current on the interface to send ID, state of health, and collision status to the serial data gateway module (SDGM). The SDGM serves as a power source and a ground for the HVCID. When the ignition is turned ON and input power from the SDGM is first detected, the HVCID responds by performing internal diagnostics and sending an ID to the SDGM. The HVCID continually communicates status messages to the SDGM, which determines if a failure is present in the HVCID circuit.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The ignition is ON.
    • The battery voltage is 7.5-18 V.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

B009F 00

The SDGM is not programmed to use sensor 1.

B009F 11

The HVCID signal circuit is shorted to voltage for 2.5 seconds.

B009F 12

The HVCID signal circuit is shorted to ground for 2.5 seconds.

B009F 39

The SDGM has not received a state of health message from the sensor for 2.5 seconds.

B009F 3A

The wrong HVCID sensor has been installed.

B009F 4A

The SDGM calibration does not match the vehicle configuration.

B009F 73

The SDGM has received invalid serial data from the HVCID sensor.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • DTC B009F is a type C DTC.
    • The driver information center (DIC) displays the SERVICE HYBRID SYSTEM message.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • DTC B009F is a type C DTC.
    • DTCs B009F 11, B009F 12, and B009F 39 will pass when the condition for setting the DTC is not present for 12.5 seconds.
    • The DIC message turns OFF when the DTC passes.
    • The SDGM will clear all history DTCs after 40 consecutive malfunction-free ignition cycles.

Diagnostic Aids

The HVCID sensor has many different internal configurations in the same external package. Ensure that the correct sensor part number is installed in the correct location.

Circuit/System Verification

Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Hybrid Crash Sensor 1 parameter. The reading should be No Crash.

Circuit/System Testing

DTC B009F 00 or B009F 4A

Verify that DTC B009F 00 or B009F 4A is not set.

If the DTC is set, program the SDGM. If the DTC resets, replace the SDGM.

DTC B009F 11, B009F 12, B009F 39, or B009F 73

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the HVCID sensor.
  2. Ignition OFF and scan tool disconnected, open and close the driver door, and wait 1 minute. Test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the SDGM.
  4. Ignition ON, verify DTC P009F 39 Last Test is Failed/Current.
  5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 1 for a short to ground or a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the SDGM.
  6. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 1 and the low reference circuit terminal 2. Verify DTC P009F 12 Last Test is Failed/Current.
  7. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the SDGM.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the HVCID sensor.

DTC B009F 3A

  1. Verify the correct HVCID sensor is installed.
  2. If the correct sensor is not installed, replace the sensor.
  3. Verify the SDGM is programmed with the correct calibration.
  4. If the correct software is not installed, program the SDGM.
  5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the HVCID sensor. If the DTC resets, replace the SDGM.

Repair Instructions
