Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    •  Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit/System Description

When the ignition is ON and the heated steering wheel switch is pressed, the switch circuit is pulled to ground. The heat module monitors the switch circuit, and turns the steering wheel heat system ON or OFF when the circuit is grounded. The heat module supplies voltage to the indicator lamp when the system is on.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, press and release the heated steering wheel switch, located on the left side of the steering wheel. Observe that the heated steering wheel indicator illuminates.
  2. Press and release the heated steering wheel switch again. Observe that the indicator turns OFF.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the heated steering wheel control module.
  2. Test for less than 5.0 ohms between the ground circuit terminal B X3 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified value, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the ignition voltage circuit terminal A X3 and ground.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  6. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the indicator control circuit terminal A X2 and B+. Verify the heated steering wheel indicator is illuminated.
  7. If the indicator does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the left steering wheel control switch.
  8. Verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the indicator control circuit terminal A X2 and ground.
  9. If the test lamp is always ON, test the indicator control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the heated steering wheel control module.
  10. If all circuits test normal, replace the steering wheel heat control module.

Component Testing

Heated Steering Wheel Control Switch

  1. Place the heated steering wheel control switch in the OFF position.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between terminal 4 and terminal 8.
  3. If less than the specified value, replace the switch.
  4. Place the heated steering wheel control switch in the ON position.
  5. Test for less than 2 ohms between terminal 4 and terminal 8.
  6. If greater than the specified value, replace the switch.
