Verify the fault is present.

Does the system operate normally?

  1. Turn the ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  2. Set the park brake.
  3. Place the transmission in neutral.
  4. Disconnect the back-up lamp switch.

Are the back-up lamps on?

Go to Step 4

Remove the VEH B/U fuse.

Are the back-up lamps on?

Go to Step 5

Repair the fused back up lamp feed circuit for a short to voltage. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the back-up lamp switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L60-E, Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L80-E, Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 3500, or Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 4500.
