Did you perform the Lighting Diagnostic System Check?

Verify the fault is present.

Does the system operate normally?

Go to Testing for Electrical Intermittents in Wiring Systems

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove and inspect the VEH B/U fuse.

Is the fuse open?

Go to Step 4

Using the J 35616 adapter, connect a test lamp between the fused back-up lamp feed circuit at the fuse and a battery positive voltage circuit. Refer to Testing for Electrical Intermittents or Testing for Short to Ground in Wiring Systems.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 10

  1. Set the park brake.
  2. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  3. Place the transmission in REVERSE.
  4. Probe the VEH B/U fuse with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 13

Remove and inspect B/U LP fuse. Refer to Testing for Short to Ground in Wiring Systems.

Is the fuse open?

Go to Step 14

  1. Reinstall the fuse.
  2. Disconnect the back-up lamp switch.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the fused ignition positive voltage circuit and a good ground at the switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 8

Using J 35616 adaptor, connect a fused jumper wire between the fused ignition positive voltage circuit and the back-up lamp feed circuit.

Do the Back-up Lamps illuminate?

Go to Step 17

  1. Reinstall the VEH B/U fuse.
  2. Turn the headlamp switch to the PARK position .
  3. Turn the hazard flasher ON.
  4. Inspect the operation of the front and the rear lamps.

Are the front lamps operating and the rear are not?

Go to Step 12

  1. Repair the short to ground in the fused back-up lamp feed circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
  2. Replace the fuse.

  1. Repair the intermittent short to ground in the fused back-up lamp feed circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
  2. Replace the fuse.

Repair the open in the ground circuit between the rear lamps and G401. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open between the engine wiring harness junction block and the rear lamps. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Repair the short to ground in the fused ignition positive voltage circuit or the back-up lamp feed circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
  2. Replace the fuse.

Repair the open in the fused ignition positive voltage circuit between the engine wiring harness junction block and the switch. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open in the back-up lamp feed circuit between the switch and the engine wiring harness junction block. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the back-up lamp switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L60-E, Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L80-E, Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 3500, or Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 4500.
