CAMPAIGN: FRONT SEAT BACK RECLINER ATTACHMENT

SUBJECT: SEAT BACK RECLINER ATTACHMENT -----------------------------

Models: 1993-1994 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Extended Cab Trucks ----------------------------------------------------

TO: ALL GENERAL MOTORS DEALERS

--------------------------

THIS BULLETIN CANCELS AND REPLACES BULLETIN 5D44 ISSUED MARCH, 1996. ALL COPIES OF 5D44 SHOULD BE DESTROYED.

THE PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION SECTION HAS BEEN REVISED TO ADD ADDITIONAL REPAIR CODES. THE SERVICE PROCEDUR HAS BEEN REVISED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF LEATHER SEATS AND NON-PRODUCTION SEATS.

General Motors of Canada Limited has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in CERTAIN 1993-1994 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra C/K Extended Cab Trucks equipped with front high-back bucket seats (A95) or 60/40 split bench seats (AE7). The seat recliner to seat frame attaching bolts could loosen, fatigue, and fracture, allowing the seat back to suddenly recline. If this were to occur to the driver's seat, this could result in sudden loss of vehicle control and a vehicle crash without prior warning.

To correct this condition, dealers will remove all foam and/or fabric sandwiched between the recliner assembly and the seat frame, install washers between the seat recliner and the seat frame at each attachment point, and install new attaching bolts torqued to a higher specification. These corrections will be performed on both the driver's and passenger's seat.

3. Remove recliner lever handle.

4. Remove screws for side cover and remove plastic cover.

5. Peel Velcro strip loose at bottom of seat back.

Note: For envelope trim seats on base level and leather interiors, remove retaining devbice, pull back cover and foam to allow access to upper bolts, and proceed to step 8.

6. Remove staple above zipper at lower centre of seat back (if applicable).

7. Unzip seat back cover and pull back to allow access to upper bolts.

8. Remove and discard all four bolts attaching recliner mechanism.

Note: If one or more bolts breat at or above the surface of the seat fram, they could be removed using appropriate care to ensure that the threads in the seat frame are not damaged. A good quality drill bit and an easy-out (extractor) will be required due to the hardness of the broken bolt(s). Repairing of damaged threads should not be attempted.

11. If foam/material is present under the recliner mechanism to frame mating surface, remove material with a putty knife to provide metal-to-metal contact between the recliner mechanism washer and the seat frame.

12. If cloth material interferes with the mating surfaces, cut excess cloth away.

13. Install new bolts and wahsers using a beam-type wrench, e.g., dial (recommended), digital or pointer. Washer shoudl be located directly against the seat frame. The easy entry cable (where applicable) should be located between the washers and the recl;iner mechanism. Assemble as follows:

IMPORTANT: Torque to 42 N,m (31 ft. lb.)

1994 Model Trucks - (Figure 3) Use new bolts and washers provided.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
