CAMPAIGN: BRAKE PEDAL PUSH ROD RETAINER

SUBJECT: BRAKE PEDAL PUSH ROD RETAINER

MODELS: 1994 Chevrolet and GMC C/K and G Model Trucks

TO: ALL GENERAL MOTORS DEALERS

General Motors of Canada Limited has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1994 Chevrolet and GMC C/K and G Model Trucks. Some of these vehicles were built with a brake pedal push rod retainer missing, mispositioned, or not properly seated. This condition could cause the stop lamp switch and the brake booster push rod to disconnect from the brake pedal, resulting in a loss of brake operation and a vehicle crash could occur without prior warning.

To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers are to inspect all vehicles to assure the brake pedal retainer is secure and fully seated in the groove and can be rotated a full 360 degrees in both directions.

Involved are, certain 1994 C/K Trucks and G Vans built through 08/31/93.

A. If clip is missing, vehicle cannot be delivered until retainer is installed (P/N 15958643).

B. If the clip is mispositioned, attempt to reposition clip over brake pedal stud and snap into groove. The clip should rotate freely. If the clip cannot be repositioned inspect the clip for damage and replace if necessary.

C. If clip rotates freely in groove (360 degrees of rotation in both directions), no further action is required.

3. Turn off engine.

SERVICE PROCEDURE - G-VAN:

Refer to 1994 Service Manual for figure of retainer installation; Page 5DI-3, Figure 1.

INSPECTION OF THE PUSH-ROD RETAINER

This is a blind inspection that requires the technician to reach in on the left side of the steering column and extend his fingers over the top side of the column to determine that the push-rod retainer is properly installed. If the retainer can be rotated 360 degrees in both directions, the retainer has been properly installed. If the retainer cannot be rotated, slight upward pressure towards the retaining pin should seat the retainer. If the retainer comes off or is found not to be in place, follow the procedure listed on Page 4.

INSTALLATION OF PUSH-ROD RETAINER

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the (4) screws of the knee bolster.

3. Remove the (2) hood cable bracket attachment bolts.

4. Remove the (2) nuts of the upper steering column bracket.

5. Remove the (2) lower steering column bolts and star washers.

6. Apply slight pressure on steering wheel to lower steering column.

NOTE: This allows access to the zero adjust brakes switch.

7. Snap retainer into place.

8. Apply tape to hold retainer in set position to allow for reinstallation of steering column.

9. Install the (2) lower steering column bolts and star washers.

10. Install the (2) nuts on the upper steering column bracket.

11. Install the (2) bolts that attach the hood cable bracket.

12. Install the (4) knee bolster screws.

13. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

14. Install Campaign Identification Label.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
