IMITATION DIESEL FUEL FILTERS- HOW TO DETERMINE NON GM PART

Model and Year 1978-81 C-10 TRUCK, 1980-84 IMPALA AND CAPRICE, 1982-83 MALIBU AND 1982-84 CELEBRITY, EL CAMINO, AND MONTE CARLO

We have been provided with samples of a look-alike diesel fuel filter for our examination. These samples exhibited a condition that could result in extensive fuel system damage. The look-alike filters that were checked did not have plastisol on the sides of the filter element. This means that the fuel would flow along the sides of the filter element without being filtered. This may lead to premature wear of the injection pump, and could even re- sult in seizure of the injection pump head and rotor.

The look-alike filter comes in a blue and white box that resembles the GM package. The external appearance of the filter also closely resembles the GM part; however, it has no external markings. The GM filter is marked as shown in the illustration below.

Once again, it is recommended that you use only GM parts; in this case, the filter. You must also be alert to pump damage due to the customer having a look-alike filter installed elsewhere. Damage resulting from the use of a look-alike filter is not covered by the warranty.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
