TRANS OIL PAN DAMAGE PREVENTION DURING R&R

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON TRANSMISSION OIL PAN DAMAGE PREVENTION DURING TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND RE-INSTALLATION

MODELS: 1988-98 CHEVROLET TILTMASTER AND GMC FORWARD W4 WITH JATCO ELECTROMATIC(R) TRANSMISSION

IMPROPER SUPPORT OF THE TRANSMISSION DURING REMOVAL AND RE- INSTALLATION CAN CAUSE THE OIL PAN BOTTOM TO BEND PERMANENTLY INWARD. THIS INWARD BENDING CAN RESTRICT THE FLOW OF TRANSMISSION FLUID INTO THE FILTER INTAKE DURING OPERATION, RESULTING IN EVENTUAL TRANSMISSION COMPONENT DAMAGE OR TRANSMISSION FAILURE.

TO PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN BOTTOM FROM BEING PERMANENTLY BENT INWARD DURING TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND RE- INSTALLATION, BE SURE TO TAKE THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS.

SUPPORT THE TRANSMISSION USING AN APPROPRIATE TRANSMISSION JACK. IF IT IS NECESSARY TO USE A CONVENTIONAL FLOOR JACK, BE SURE IT HAS AN APPROPRIATE TRANSMISSION JACK ADAPTER.

BE SURE TO ADJUST THE TRANSMISSION JACK ARMS SO THAT EACH ARM MAKES SOLID CONTACT WITH ONE OF THE FOUR OUTER CORNERS OF THE OIL PAN AT THE MOUNTING FLANGE AREA BETWEEN THE OIL PAN SIDES AND THE OUTER EDGE.

BE SURE THE TRANSMISSION IS EVENLY BALANCED ON THE TRANSMISSION JACK.

BE SURE THE OIL PAN BOTTOM DOES NOT REST DIRECTLY ON THE TRANSMISSION JACK'S SUPPORT PLATE OR ON THE HEADS OF THE ADJUSTING BOLTS FOR THE ARMS. IF PROPERLY MOUNTED ON THE TRANSMISSION JACK, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE EVENLY SUSPENDED ABOVE THE SUPPORT PLATE BY THE ARMS OF THE TRANSMISSION JACK.
