Info - Revised Flushing Procedure for Contaminated Power Steering Reservoirs

Subject:Revised Flushing Procedure for Contaminated Power Steering Reservoirs

Models:1990-2000 All Chevrolet and GMC Medium Duty Commercial Vehicles
Equipped with Remote Reservoirs

When replacing a power steering (PS) pump, a thorough flush and cleaning of the PS system is necessary. If the system is not thoroughly flushed, metal contaminants may cause the replacement PS pump to wear prematurely.

When replacing a PS pump, use the following procedure. Refer to the Power Steering System subsection of the appropriate Medium Duty Service Manual for PS reservoir flushing and replacement procedures.

  1. Thoroughly flush the PS system.
  2. Remove the PS reservoir from the vehicle.
  3. Manually clean the reservoir at the dealership's parts washing station.
  4. Remove and thoroughly clean the magnet located at the bottom of the reservoir.
  5. Reinstall the magnet after the reservoir is cleaned.
  6. Ensure that the reservoir is clean and dry before reinstalling into the vehicle.

These additional steps should aid in removing any accumulation of contaminants from the bottom of the reservoir.
