NOISE FROM FRONT WHEELS (INSTALL BRAKE PAD RETAINERS)

SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A CONDITION WHICH RESULTS IN A NOISE PROPAGATING FROM THE FRONT WHEELS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND/OR DURING BRAKE APPLICATION. UPON INSPECTION OF THE FRONT BRAKES, WEAR MAY BE EVIDENT ON THE PAD RESTS ON EITHER OR BOTH THE CALIPER AND BRAKE PADS WHICH ALLOWS THE PADS TO RUB ON THE HUB SECTION OF THE ROTOR. THIS WEAR IS THE RESULT OF THE BRAKE PADS VIBRATING ON THE CALIPER HOUSING. TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, 1986 PRODUCTION VEHICLES EFFECTIVE WITH VIN BREAKPOINTS 1GDJ6P1BXGV521828 (GMC) AND 1GBJ6P1B6GV112105 (CHEVROLET) UTILIZE A "Z" SPRING ON THE FRONT CALIPER ASSEMBLY TO HOLD THE BRAKE PADS IN POSITION. VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO THESE VIN BREAKPOINTS THAT EXHIBIT PAD REST WEAR CAN BE REPAIRED BY INSTALLING NEW BRAKE PAD KITS WHICH INCLUDE REVISED PAD RETAINER SPRINGS FOR USE WITH PAST MODEL YEAR DAYTON WALTHER CALIPERS. SERVICE INFORMATION ------------------- INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ARE INCLUDED WITH EACH AXLE PAD KIT, SEE FIGURES 1, 2, AND 3. IF AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW PADS AND RETAINER SPRINGS, WEAR ON THE EXISTING CALIPER IS ENOUGH TO ALLOW THE NEW PADS TO CONTACT THE HUB SECTION OF THE ROTOR, THE CALIPER MUST BE REPLACED. General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
