WORK AREA & EQUIP. REQUIREMENT TO OVERHAUL TRANSMISSIONS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1986 and Previous

This bulletin contains a list of recommendations for work area and equipment needs for a Dealer Technician to efficiently service transmissions. This list may be used by Dealers interested in improving their transmission service and overhaul procedures.

Equipment and Work Space

At least two work benches are required for surface area to disassemble, clean, and inspect parts. This permits disassembly on one bench and transfer of parts to the clean surface of second bench as parts are cleaned. A cleaning tank is needed between or beside work surfaces. Tank must not be used for cleaning other parts such as engine components to avoid contaminates such as carbon particles. A separate transmission unit repair area or enough stall space in width or length is necessary for placement of benches, tank, special tool cabinet, tool chest, and trash barrel.

Quick-Reg Forms

To same time and avoid repeat trips to the Parts Department, it is preferable for the technician to utilize Hydramatic part requisition form (available from GM Parts) at the time major parts are cleaned and inspected.

Selective Parts

An assortment of selective size thrust washers, band pins, etc., should be available at the work area for immediate selection by the technican when unit is reassembled.

Special Tools

It is suggested that transmission Special Tools be kept at the work area in a locking cabinet under the technician's care and responsibility. Tool set should be complete, including a dial indicator. Replace worn-out or unusable tools. Kent-Moore is a recommended tool source.

Cooler Flusher

A cooler flusher is necessary for adequate removal of sediment from the cooler system when an overhaul is performed where considerable particles exist from the failure. Cooler flushers will soon be available from Kent-Moore Tool Company.

Management

When an efficient work area is designed and utilized, improved quality, greater technician efficiency, and less vehicle down-time is the result.

Service management's responsibility is to assure:

A. Old parts go in trash barrel, not under bench. B. Work area is kept clean.

C. Special Tools and selective parts are accounted for and properly stored at work area.
