DELAYED ENGAGEMENT-CRUISE III MISDIAGNOSED AS MALFUNCTION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: All 1984-85 Vehicles Equipped With Custom cruise III

The Custom Cruise III system contains a built-in delay feature when it is first turned on. Specifically, with this system, only after the multi-function lever switch has been in the 'on' position for approximately one to two seconds will the cruise control system engage -- with depression of the set/coast button. The reason for this time delay is two fold:

It allows ample opportunity for the electronic control module (cruise controller) to correctly interpret vehicle speed.

Secondly, an important safety consideration is yielded as well. This same delay prevents the cruise controller from storing an uncalled-for 'set' speed.

This built in delay could be misdiagnosed as a malfunctioning cruise control system.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
