CAMPAIGN: ENG./TRANS. MISMATCH (REBUILD TRANSMISSION)

Subject: PRODUCT CAMPAIGN 86C03 ENGINE TRANSMISSION MISMATCH

Model and Year: 1985 & 1986 CHEVROLET C70 MEDIUM DUTY KODIAK TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH RPO ME3 (MT 643 MODEL DETROIT DIESEL ALLISON TRANSMISSION) AND RPO LQC (3208T MODEL CATERPILLAR ENGINE)

General Motors has become aware of a condition where certain 1985 & 1986 model C70 Medium Duty Kodiak trucks were assembled with an improperly matched engine/transmission combination. An Allison Model MT 643 transmission governed at 2,600 RPM was improperly mated to a Caterpillar Model 3208T engine governed at 2,200 RPM. This mismatch results in the transmission not shifting into 4th gear when the engine is at full throttle; poor vehicle acceleration capability; and the torque converter slipping excessively resulting in higher than normal transmission oil temperatures which will shorten transmission life.

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, it will be necessary to rebuild the transmission torque converter and valve body to shift at 2,200 RPM on all involved vehicles.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1985 & 1986 Chevrolet C70 Medium Duty Kodiak model trucks equipped with a Detroit Diesel Allison MT 643 automatic transmission (RPO ME3) and a Caterpillar 3208T engine (RPO LQC). The only vehicles involved are listed below:

Each label provides a space to include the five digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner.

Apply "Campaign Identification Label" onlv on a clean dry surface.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
