Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 660296  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Place a suitable container under the engine in order to drain the oil.
  3. Remove the oil drain plug.
  4. Drain the engine oil.

  6. Remove the oil pan skid plate bolts and plate.

  7. Object Number: 328107  Size: SH
  8. Remove the crossmember bolts and crossmember, 2-wheel drive (2WD) vehicle shown.

  9. Object Number: 487521  Size: SH
  10. Remove the crossmember bolts and crossmember, 4-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle shown.

  11. Object Number: 660316  Size: SH
  12. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.

  13. Object Number: 660319  Size: SH
  14. Remove the lower oil pan bolts and nuts.
  15. Separate the lower oil pan from the lower crankcase.
  16. Remove the lower oil pan.

  17. Object Number: 663624  Size: SH
  18. Remove the oil level sensor (1) and clip (3).
  19. Clean the lower oil pan. Remove any sludge or other deposits.
  20. Clean the lower oil pan mating surface (4).
  21. Inspect the lower oil pan for dents or distortion.
  22. Inspect the lower oil pan mating surface for damage.
  23. Replace the lower oil pan if any damage is found.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 663624  Size: SH
  1. Install the oil level sensor (1) and clip (3).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the oil level sensor bolt (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  5. Apply a 2 mm (1/8 in) wide bead of sealant GM P/N 97720043 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent to the lower oil pan mating surface.
  6. Install the lower oil pan.
  7. Install the lower oil pan bolts and nuts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts/nuts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.

  10. Object Number: 328107  Size: SH
  11. Install the crossmember and bolts, 2WD vehicle shown.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).


    Object Number: 487521  Size: SH
  13. Install the crossmember and bolts, 4WD vehicle shown.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).


    Object Number: 309158  Size: SH
  15. Install the oil pan skid plate and bolts.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  17. Install the oil filter and the oil pan drain plug. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  18. Lower the vehicle.
