Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Rear Seal 4WD

Tools Required

    • J 36825 Output Shaft Oil Seal Remover
    • J 23907 Slide Hammer
    • J 36502-2A Output Shaft Oil Seal Protector
    • J 36502 Extension Housing Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 4781  Size: SH
  1. Remove transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG 236/246-NP8 (Two Speed Automatic) or Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG 261-NP2 (Two Speed Manual).
  2. Using J 36825 and J 23907 remove the output shaft seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 4757  Size: SH
  1. Position the J 36502-2A over the output shaft.

  2. Object Number: 4758  Size: SH
  3. Using J 36502 install the NEW output shaft seal.

  4. Object Number: 4757  Size: SH
  5. Remove the J 36502-2A from the output shaft.

  6. Object Number: 7909  Size: SH
  7. Fill the space between the seal lips with grease GM P/N 1052497 or equivalent.
  8. Install transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG 236/246-NP8 (Two Speed Automatic) or Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG 261-NP2 (Two Speed Manual).
  9. Check the transmission fluid level. Add as necessary.
  10. Lower the vehicle.

Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Rear Seal 2WD

Tools Required

    • J 23129 Universal Seal Remover
    • J 6125-1B Slide Hammer
    • J 36503 Extension Housing Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 696799  Size: SH
  1. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  2. Remove the rear oil seal using J 6125-1B (1) and J 23129 (2).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 548114  Size: SH
  1. Using J 36503 install the NEW rear oil seal.
  2. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  3. Check to transmission fluid level. Add if necessary.
  4. Lower the vehicle.

Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Front Seal

J 38801 Input Shaft Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 772346  Size: SH
  1. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  2. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder bolts.
  3. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder.

  4. Object Number: 761058  Size: SH
  5. Remove the input shaft bearing retainer bolts.
  6. Remove the input shaft bearing retainer.

    Screw 2 of the removed bolts into the threaded holes in the retainer in order to remove the retainer.

  7. Using a hammer and a punch, remove the transmission housing front oil seal from the input shaft bearing retainer.
  8. Remove the old gasket material from the input shaft bearing retainer.

Installation Procedure

Important: Inspect the input shaft bearing retainer for any nicks or cracks that may result in a leak. Replace as necessary.


    Object Number: 761084  Size: SH
  1. Position a NEW oil seal in the input shaft bearing retainer.
  2. Using J 38801 install the oil seal.

  3. Object Number: 4770  Size: SH
  4. Apply RTV sealer GM P/N 12345739 (canadian P/N 10953472) or equivalent to the inside edge of the bearing retainer mating surface.

  5. Object Number: 761058  Size: SH
  6. Position the input shaft bearing retainer.
  7. Align the bearing retainer oil drain hole with the drain hole in the transmission housing.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the input shaft bearing retainer bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the input shaft bearing retainer bolts to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the clutch actuator cylinder and the bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the clutch actuator cylinder bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  12. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  13. Lower the vehicle.
