  1. Remove the fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove both upper valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Upper Left Side and Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Upper Right Side .
  3. Rotate the engine in the normal direction and put the number one piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
  4. Number one cylinder is right side front. While turning the engine watch the intake valve to open and close. Align the mark on the crankshaft balancer with the pointer on the engine.

  5. Loosen the valve clearance adjusting screws for the valve being adjusted.
  6. Insert the feeler gauge between the tip of rocker arm and the valve bridge.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Adjust the intake and the exhaust valve clearance to 0.3 mm (0.012 in) with the engine cold.
  9. Shown are the valves that can be adjusted at number one COMPRESSION stroke TDC.

    Tighten
    Tighten valve adjusting screw lock nut to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  10. Turn the engine one turn in the normal direction and put the number one piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the exhaust stroke to adjust the remaining valve clearance.
  11. While turning the engine watch the exhaust valve to open and close. Align the mark on the crankshaft balancer with the pointer on the engine.

  12. Loosen the valve clearance adjusting screws for the valves being adjusted.
  13. Insert the feeler gauge between the tip of rocker arm and the valve bridge.

  15. Adjust the valve clearance to 0.3 mm (0.0112 in) with the engine cold.
  16. Shown are the valves that can be adjusted at number one EXHAUST stroke TDC.

    Tighten
    Tighten valve clearance adjusting screw lock nut to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  17. Install both upper valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Upper Left Side and Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Upper Right Side .
  18. Install the fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
