J 42371 Clutch Line Release Tool

Removal Procedure

  1. Shift the transmission into 3rd or 4th speed gear.

  2. Object Number: 692215  Size: SH
  3. Remove the shift lever from the shift tower.
  4. Do not remove the shift lever adjusting nut.

  5. Object Number: 394463  Size: SH
  6. Remove 4 plastic retainer plugs securing the shift boot retainer to the shift boot.
  7. Remove 4 screws securing the shift boot and insulator to the floor panel.
  8. Remove the retainer and shift boot from the shift lever.

  9. Object Number: 178851  Size: SH
  10. Remove the 4 bolts securing the shift housing to the transmission.
  11. Remove the shift tower from the vehicle.
  12. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  13. If needed drain the transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  14. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement .
  15. If equipped, remove the two transfer case shields. Refer to Transfer Case Shield Replacement .
  16. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  17. If equipped with a manual transfer case, remove the manual transfer case shift linkage. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .

  18. Object Number: 776999  Size: SH
  19. Using the J 42371 , push back on the white plastic sleeve on the quick connect in order to disconnect the clutch actuator cylinder to clutch master cylinder quick connect fitting.

  20. Object Number: 102876  Size: SH
  21. Disconnect the wiring harness and connector from the vehicle speed sensor, backup lamp switch, and transmission harness retainers.
  22. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  23. Remove the crossmember bolts and crossmember.
  24. Remove the transmission rear mount.

  26. Remove the 4 bolts securing the transmission to the bell housing.
  27. Pull the transmission straight back on the clutch hub splines. Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch plate and the clutch cover.
  28. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  29. Remove the clutch actuator from the transmission.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 757703  Size: SH
  1. Install the clutch actuator to the transmission.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the transmission:
  4. 2.1. Ensure the transmission is positioned in the 3rd or 4th speed gear.
    2.2. Rotate the transmission clockwise onto the clutch hub splines.
    2.3. Install the 4 bolts that secure the transmission to the bell housing.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the transmission rear mount.
  6. Install the crossmember and crossmember bolts.
  7. Tighten

        • Tighten the crossmember bolts to 50 N·m(37 lb ft).
        • Tighten the transmission mount to transmission bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
        • Tighten the transmission mount to crossmember nut to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
  8. Install the clutch line to the clutch actuator. Refer to Clutch Concentric Actuator Cylinder Replacement in Clutch.

  9. Object Number: 102876  Size: SH
  10. Connect the wiring harness and connector from the vehicle speed sensor, backup lamp switch, and transmission harness retainers.
  11. Fill the transmission with fluid if necessary. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  12. If equipped with a manual transfer case install the manual transfer case shift linkage. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .
  13. If equipped with a manual transfer case install the propeller shafts. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement .
  14. If equipped, install the transfer case shields. Refer to Transfer Case Shield Replacement .
  15. Lower the vehicle.

  16. Object Number: 178851  Size: SH
  17. Install the 4 bolts securing the shift housing to the transmission.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the shift housing bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  19. Position the retainer and shift boot onto the shift lever.
  20. Install 4 screws securing the shift boot and insulator to the floor panel.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  22. Install 4 plastic retainer plugs securing the shift boot retainer to the shift boot.

  23. Object Number: 692215  Size: SH
  24. Install the shift lever to the shift tower.
  25. If required, use the shift lever adjusting nut to center the shift lever.

    Tighten
    Tighten the shift lever nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
