Inspection Procedure

Caution: When you use compressed air in order to clear fluid passages and to dry parts, always aim the air pressure away from face and eyes. Always wear adequate eye protection in order to avoid injury from dirt and debris that may adhere to parts.

Important: Adhere to the following general precautions when inspecting the transmission case and the case components:

   • Work in a clean area and with clean tools.
   • Do not use wipe cloths or rags.
   • Do not use solvents on the following components:
   • Rubber seals
   • Plastic or Teflon® thrust washers or spacers
   • Blow out all fluid passages using compressed air.
   • Clean out all small passages using a fine wire.
   • Carefully handle all small parts.
   • Clean all parts and allow to air dry before assembly.

  1. Clean the case components using a solvent.
  2. Allow the components to air dry.
  3. Inspect the case porosity. Refer to Automatic Transmission for case porosity repair procedures.
  4. Inspect the case to valve body surfaces for damage.
  5. Inspect the vent for damage.
  6. Inspect all fluid passages using compressed air.
  7. Inspect the case bores for the following conditions:
  8. • General damage
    • Porosity
    • Burrs
    • Sharp edges (Remove using a fine emery cloth.)
  9. Inspect the bolt holes for thread damage. Refer to Thread Repair in Engine Mechanical for thread repair procedures.
  10. Inspect the case interior for the following conditions:
  11. • Damaged ring grooves
    • Casting flash
    • Worn or damaged clutch plate lugs
  12. Inspect the case exterior for scarred or damaged gasket mating surfaces.
