A fuel injector bore cleaning kit, EN-47909, is scheduled for release at the end of October, 2005 for use in all Duramax™ diesel engines. This kit will aid in the cleaning of carbon deposits from the injector sleeve or the injector bore during an injector replacement.

Injector Bore Cleaning Instructions

  1. Install the radial brush to the handle assembly.
  2. Insert the brush into the bore and rotate to break loose any carbon deposits from the injector bore walls and the combustion deck hole.
  3. Caution:  Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

  4. Use compressed air to evacuate debris from the injector bore.
  5. Install the axial brush to the handle assembly.
  6. Insert the axial brush into the bore and, while rotating, apply a slight downward pressure to force the brush ends to the bottom corners of the injector bore.
  7. Caution:  Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage

  8. Use compressed air to evacuate debris from the injector bore.
  9. Notice:  Do not allow excessive amounts of solvent to go into the cylinder during cleaning. Failure to do so may cause engine damage upon startup.

  10. Lightly dampen a cotton swab with GM Top Engine Cleaner, P/N 1052626 (in Canada, 993026) or an equivalent product, and wipe the deposits from the injector bore.
  11. Inspect the bore for deposits and repeat brushing if necessary.
  12. Caution:  Keep hands and face clear of glow plug holes while cranking. Hot liquid or gases may be expelled during cranking.

Caution:  Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

Notice:  Do not crank the engine to expel solvent from the cylinder on a 2001-2004 C/K or C4500/5500 vehicle with the LB7 engine. Cranking the engine with the injector removed may cause the injector sleeve to unseat and fill the cylinder with engine coolant.

  13. If necessary, on LLY/LBZ engines only, crank the engine to expel any solvent before starting the engine.
  14. 9.1. Remove the glow plugs.
    9.2. Disable the fuel system.
9.3. Crank the engine to expel any excess solvent
    • For 2004-2005 C/K trucks, remove the Ign 1 relay.
    • For 2004-2005 C4500/5500 trucks, remove the Ign B relay.
    • For all 2006 vehicles, disconnect the crankshaft position sensor.
  15. Using the cotton swabs supplied with the kit, wipe the injector bore clean of solvent or debris.
