  1. Ensure that the battery is fully charged.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START.
  3. Wait 15 seconds and use a J 39200 digital multi-meter (DMM) in order to measure the voltage at the battery while cranking the engine.

Is the reading greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

Using a J 39200 in order to measure the voltage drop between the negative terminal and the engine block while cranking the engine.

Is the reading greater than the specified value?

0.5 V

  1. Load test the battery. Refer to Battery Load Test .
  2. Perfrom the parasitic load test, refer to Battery Electrical Drain/Parasitic Load .

Does the battery function properly?

Replace the negative battery cable.

Does the starter solenoid continue to click and the engine to crank slowly or not at all?

Measure the voltage drop between the B+ terminal and the starter solenoid terminal B while cranking the engine.

Is the reading greater than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 8

Repair or replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Does the starter solenoid continue to click and the engine to crank slowly or not at all?

Replace the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement .
