Subject: Supplement to 03-06-04-002 4HE1-TC Diesel Engine - Cold Weather No Start

Models:.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

Some dealers and customers have reported a no start or hard start condition in extremely cold sub-zero temperature weather on N/W models with the 4HE1-TC diesel engine after being shutdown for a period of time. Vehicles may not restart after a cold soak in sub-zero ambient temperatures after a shutdown period of more than 20 minutes. Even after installation of the fuel injection pump electric heater as released in Service Bulletin #03-06-04-002, vehicles may not restart after the above mentioned cold soak when the injection pump heater cannot be plugged in. Customers express concerns that their vehicles may not restart after shutting them down to make deliveries during cold weather operation.

Recommendation/Instructions:

A new diesel fuel injection pump insulated cover has been released to retain heat in the pump and improve extreme cold weather restarts. The new insulated cover is molded for an exact fit over the injection pump and clears all attaching hardware, lines and fittings. In those geographic areas that are most affected by sub-zero temperatures, it is recommended that the new insulated injection pump cover be used in combination with the injection pump electric heater for optimum cold soak restart performance.
