Tools Required

    • J 41480 Front/Rear Cover Alignment - Oil Pan Surface
    • J 41476 Front/Rear Cover Alignment - Crankshaft Oil Seal Area

Important: 

   • Do not reuse the crankshaft oil seal or engine rear cover gasket.
   • Do not apply any type of sealant to the engine rear cover gasket (unless specified).
   • All gasket surfaces should be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly.
   • The special tools in this procedure are used to correctly align the engine rear cover at the oil pan surface and to centre the crankshaft rear oil seal.
   • An incorrectly aligned engine rear cover may cause premature rear oil seal wear and/or engine assembly oil leaks.
   • The crankshaft rear oil seal will be installed after the engine rear cover has been installed.
   • The crankshaft rear oil seal MUST be centred in relation to the crankshaft.

  1. Install the engine rear cover (2) and engine rear cover gasket (3) .
  2. Install the engine rear cover to cylinder block retaining bolts (1).
  3. DO NOT fully tighten at this stage.

  4. Assemble the J 41479  (2).
  5. Install the J 41479 to engine rear cover retaining bolts
  6. DO NOT fully tighten at this stage.

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  7. Install the J 41479 to cylinder block retaining bolts
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts (1) four places to 25 N·m(18 lb ft).

  9. Rotate the crankshaft until 2 opposing flywheel mounting bolt holes are parallel to the oil pan surface.
  10. Important: The tapered legs of the alignment tool must enter the engine rear cover oil seal bore.

  11. Install the J 41476  (3).
  12. Tighten the J 41479 to engine rear cover retaining bolts (1).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  14. Tighten the engine rear cover to cylinder block retaining bolts (4).
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  16. Remove the J 41476  (3).
  17. Remove the J 41479  (2)

  19. Place a straight edge tool across he cylinder block and engine rear cover oil pan sealing surfaces.
  20. • Insert a feeler gauge between the engine rear cover and straight edge tool.
    • The cover must be flush with the oil pan surface to no more than (A).

    Specification
    Dimension (A): 0.25 mm (0.01 in).

    • If the engine rear cover to cylinder block oil pan surface alignment is not within specification, repeat the engine rear cover alignment procedure.
    • If the correct alignment cannot be obtained, replace the engine rear cover.
