CAMPAIGN: COOLANT TEMPERATURE LIGHT WIRE OMITTED

Chevrolet Motor Division has determined that some early 1983 Full Size Chevrolet Models equipped with RPO LF9 (diesel engine) and a base instrument cluster have a wire omitted in the coolant temperature warning circuit.

Without this jumper wire, the temperature light will not illuminate, should the engine overheat.

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, it will be necessary to install the omitted wire in the engine temperature warning circuit.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain early 1983 Full Size Chevrolet Models equipped with RPO LF9 (diesel engine) and a base instrument cluster within the following vehicle breakpoints:

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign, at no charge to owners regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made.

PARTS INFORMATION

Material required to fabricate jumper wire(s) is to be obtained from dealership parts inventory.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Fabrication Of Jumper Wire

1. Strip the insulation off both ends of a 12 inch length of (dark green) No. 18 gauge stranded automotive wire approximately 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch.

2. Crimp one male terminal (P/N 2962987)or equivalent, on each end of the wire.

3. Insert each terminal into a plastic female locking type connector (P/N 2984528). Terminals must lock in the connectors.

Installation Procedure

4. Open Hood.

5. Locate the dark green temperature sender lead near the rear of the left hand rocker cover (Refer to illustration).

6. Locate the dark green temperature switch lead near the bulkhead connector (Refer to illustration).

7. Connect the new jumper wire between the temperature sender lead and the temperature switch lead, making sure both connectors are locked.

8. Secure jumper wire to harness with the existing strap.

9. Install campaign completion label and close hood.

Description: Fabricate and install jumper wire in the temperature warning circuit.

*Campaign Administrative Allowance

Dealers will automatically receive the correct labor allowance and a $.60 material allowance when labor operation V1520 is performed. This includes the normal 30% dealer allowance.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label". Each label provides a space to include the five digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner.

Apply "Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean dry surface.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE

REFER TO THE CURRENT CHEVROLET SERVICE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUAL AND CLAIMS PROCESSING MANUAL FOR CAMPAIGN HANDLING AND ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES.

Dear Chevrolet Owner:

Chevrolet Motor Division has determined that some ealy 1983 Full Size Chevrolet Models equipped with RPO LF9 (diesel engine) and a base instrument cluster have a wire omitted in the engine coolant temperature warning circuit. Without this wire, the temperature light will not illuminate should the engine overheat.

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring on your vehicle, it will be necessary that a wire be installed in the engine temperature warning circuit.

To correct this condition on your vehicle, please contact your Chevrolet Dealer to arrange a service date. Your dealer will install the omitted temperature wire. The labor time to install this jumper wire is approximately 20 minutes. Please allow additional time for the dealer to process your vehicle.

Instructions have been sent to your dealer. The service will be performed at no charge to you.

The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist them in making the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid owner reply card and returning it to us.
