Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 33370  Size: SH
  1. Remove the transmission control. Refer to Shift Control Assembly Replacement .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the transmission oil drain plug.
  4. Drain the oil from the transmission.
  5. Support the rear axle with safety stands.
  6. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  7. Remove the rear axle torque arm.
  8. Remove the right side catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side and Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side in Engine Exhaust.

  10. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  11. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  12. Object Number: 477352  Size: SH
  13. Remove the rosebud clip (1) from the transmission.
  14. Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector (2).

  15. Object Number: 477355  Size: SH
  16. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
  17. • Skip shift solenoid (1)
    • Reverse lockout solenoid (2)
    • Vehicle speed sensor (3)
    • Oxygen sensor (5)
  18. Remove the push in retainer (4) and wiring harness bracket.
  19. Support the engine with safety stands.

  21. Using J 36221 , depress the white circular release ring on the actuator cylinder hose and simultaneously pull lightly on the master cylinder hose to disconnect.
  22. Protect both hose coupling ends from dirt and damage.
  23. Install the J 42055 to the transmission jack.
  24. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  25. Position and firmly secure the J 42055 with the transmission jack to the transmission.
  26. Remove the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  27. Slowly lower the transmission to access the transmission bolts.

  29. Remove the transmission bolts (2).
  30. Remove the transmission (1) from the vehicle
  31. .

  32. Remove the transmission vent tube bolt (2).
  33. Remove the transmission vent tube (3).

  34. Object Number: 43256  Size: SH
  35. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder bolts (1).
  36. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder (2).
  37. Remove the clutch housing bolts.
  38. Remove the clutch housing from the transmission case.

  40. Install the J 39430 to the transmission.
  41. Remove the transmission from J 42055 and the transmission jack.
  42. Mount the transmission on a workbench using J 3289-20 .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 351939  Size: SH
  1. Remove the transmission from the J 3289-20 mounted on the workbench.
  2. Position and firmly secure the J 42055 mounted on the transmission jack to the transmission.
  3. Remove the J 39430 from the transmission.
  4. Install the clutch housing to the transmission case.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the clutch housing bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the clutch housing bolts 50 to N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the clutch actuator cylinder (2).
  9. Install the clutch actuator cylinder bolts (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the clutch actuator cylinder bolts (1) to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  11. Install the transmission vent tube (3) to the vent.
  12. Install the transmission vent tube bolt (2).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission vent tube bolt (2) to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  14. Install the transmission (1) to the vehicle.
  15. Slowly raise the transmission until in place.
  16. Install the transmission bolts (2).
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  18. Install the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  19. Remove the transmission jack from the transmission.
  20. Remove the J 42055 from the transmission jack.

  21. Object Number: 43255  Size: SH

    Important: DO NOT rely on an audible click or a visual verification of the clutch hydraulic hose quick connect fitting connection.

  22. Connect the clutch actuator cylinder hose to the clutch master cylinder hose.
  23. Push together the clutch hydraulic hose quick connect fittings, then pull back on the fittings to verify engagement.
  24. Check the clutch hydraulic hoses for kinks or twists.
  25. Remove the engine safety stands.

  27. Install the wiring harness bracket and push in retainer (4).
  28. Connect the following electrical connectors:
  29. • Oxygen sensor (5)
    • Vehicle speed sensor (3)
    • Reverse lockout solenoid (2)
    • Skip shift solenoid (1)

  30. Connect the backup lamp switch electrical connector (2).
  31. Install the rosebud clip (1) to the transmission.
  32. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  33. Object Number: 220633  Size: SH
  34. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  35. Install the right side catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side and Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side in Engine Exhaust.
  36. Install the rear axle torque arm.
  37. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  38. Remove the rear axle safety stands.
  39. Install the transmission oil drain plug.
  40. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission oil drain plug to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  41. Remove the transmission fluid fill plug.
  42. Refill the transmission with fluid.
  43. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Refer to Hydraulic Clutch Bleeding in Clutch.
  44. Lower the vehicle.
  45. Install the transmission control. Refer to Shift Control Assembly Replacement .
