Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  2. Remove the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 441129  Size: SH
  4. Remove the balance shaft gear (2) from the camshaft (1).

  5. Object Number: 35815  Size: SH
  6. Remove the camshaft thrust plate bolts.
  7. Remove the camshaft thrust plate.
  8. Remove the camshaft key.
  9. Notice: All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing or installing the camshaft to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.

  10. Use the following procedure to remove the camshaft:
  11. 7.1. Install three 5/16-18 x 4 in bolts in the camshaft bolt holes.
    7.2. Carefully rotate and pull the camshaft out.
  12. Inspect the camshaft and bearings. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 3.8 L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the camshaft with lubricant GM P/N 12345501, Canada P/N 992704, or equivalent before installation.
  2. Install the camshaft.
  3. Install the camshaft key.
  4. Install the camshaft thrust plate.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the camshaft thrust plate bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the camshaft thrust plate bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  8. Install the balance shaft drive gear (2) to the camshaft (1).

  9. Object Number: 441151  Size: SH
  10. Align the timing marks (2) on the balance shaft gear (1) and the balance shaft drive gear (3).
  11. Install the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  12. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
