Water Pump Replacement 3.8L Engine

Tools Required

J 36660-A Torque/Angle Meter

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 221689  Size: SH
  1. Open the radiator drain cock.
  2. Partially drain the radiator.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Close the radiator drain cock.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the radiator drain cock to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  6. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  7. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
  8. Reposition the radiator inlet hose clamp at the water pump.
  9. Remove the radiator inlet hose from the water pump.

  11. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  12. Remove the water pump pulley.

  13. Object Number: 11687  Size: SH
  14. Remove the water pump bolts (1).
  15. Remove the water pump (2).
  16. Remove the water pump gasket (3).
  17. Clean and inspect the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 5.7L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 11687  Size: SH
  1. Install a new water pump gasket (3).
  2. Install the water pump (2).
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the water pump bolts (1).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts (1) to 15 N·m (11 lb ft). Using the J 36660-A torque the water pump bolts an additional 80 degrees.

  6. Connect the radiator inlet hose to the water pump.
  7. Position the radiator inlet hose at the water pump.
  8. Install the water pump pulley.
  9. Install the water pump pulley bolts until snug.
  10. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
  11. Tighten the water pump bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  13. Add the engine coolant.

Water Pump Replacement 5.7L Engine

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Engine Mechanical - 5.7L.
  3. Remove the radiator inlet hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement .
  4. Remove the fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 221671  Size: SH
  6. Reposition the outlet hose clamp at the water outlet.
  7. Remove the outlet hose from the water outlet.

  8. Object Number: 220581  Size: SH
  9. Remove the drive belt tensioner pulley bolts, and pulley from the water pump.

  10. Object Number: 220620  Size: SH
  11. Remove the throttle body heater outlet hose from the radiator.

  12. Object Number: 550333  Size: SH
  13. Remove the water pump bolts.

  14. Object Number: 550334  Size: SH
  15. Remove the water pump.
  16. Remove the water pump gaskets.
  17. Clean and inspect the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 5.7L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 550334  Size: SH
  1. Install the water pump and gaskets to the engine block.

  2. Object Number: 550333  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the water pump bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  5. Install the throttle body heater outlet hose to the radiator.

  6. Object Number: 220581  Size: SH
  7. Install the drive belt tensioner and bolts to the water pump.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the drive belt tensioner bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Install the outlet hose to the water outlet.
  10. Position the outlet hose clamp at the water outlet.
  11. Install the fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  12. Install the inlet hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement .
  13. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Engine Mechanical - 5.7L.
  14. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
