Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 444792  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the breather tube at the air cleaner outlet duct.

  2. Object Number: 424556  Size: SH
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.
  4. Partially drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the radiator inlet hose from the water outlet housing. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  6. Object Number: 1545576  Size: SH

    Important: The PCV orifice is part of the valve cover and cannot be removed. If damaged, replace the valve cover.

  7. Remove the PCV valve hose assembly from the valve rocker arm cover.

  9. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.

  10. Object Number: 328566  Size: SH

    Important: A/C compressor and bracket removal is not necessary.

  11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  12. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.
  13. Discard the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.

  15. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.

  16. Object Number: 328573  Size: SH
  17. Remove the valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  18. Discard the valve rocker arm cover gasket.

  19. Object Number: 1545276  Size: SH
  20. Clean the valve rocker arm cover in cleaning solvent.
  21. Dry the valve rocker arm cover with compressed air.
  22. Inspect the valve rocker arm cover for the following:
  23. • Damage to the PCV orifice or grommet (1)
    • Damage to the bolt holes (2)
    • A damaged valve rocker arm cover may interfere with the valve rocker arms.
    • Damage to the exterior of the valve rocker arm cover (3)
    • Gouges or damage to the sealing surface (4)
    • Damage to the oil fill tube grommet (5)
    • Restrictions to the ventilation system passages

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 328573  Size: SH

    Important: Do not reuse the valve cover gasket or the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.

  1. Install the NEW valve rocker arm cover gasket into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Install the NEW valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets into the valve rocker arm cover.

  3. Object Number: 480519  Size: SH
  4. Install the valve rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head.

  5. Object Number: 328566  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  8. Install the radiator inlet hose to the water outlet housing. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  10. Install the PCV valve hose assembly to the valve rocker arm cover.

  11. Object Number: 1545578  Size: SH
  12. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.

  13. Object Number: 424556  Size: SH
  14. Install air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls-4.3L.

  15. Object Number: 444792  Size: SH
  16. Connect the breather tube to the air cleaner outlet duct.
