INFO. VARIOUS BRAKE NOISES WHEN APPLYING SRVC. BRAKE

SUBJECT: INFORMATION - VARIOUS BRAKE NOISES WHEN APPLYING SERVICE BRAKE (NORMAL CONDITION)

MODELS: 1994-98 BUICK SKYLARK 1994-98 CHEVROLET BERETTA, CAVALIER, CORSICA 1994-98 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA 1994-98 PONTIAC GRAND AM, SUNFIRE

WHEN APPLYING THE SERVICE BRAKE, VARIOUS BRAKE NOISES MAY BE HEARD SUCH AS A GRINDING, GRATING, ROUGHNESS OR WIRE BRUSH NOISE.

THESE NOISES MAY BE DUE TO SURFACE CORROSION ON DRUMS AND ROTORS IN HIGH HUMIDITY OR WET CONDITIONS AFTER VEHICLE IS NOT USED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. THE TIME WHICH RESULTS IN CORROSION WILL VARY UPON TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDTY. THIS IS A NORMAL CONDITION.

PRIOR TO REMOVING OR REPLACING ANY BRAKE COMPONENTS, PERFORM FOUR (4) TO SIX (6) MODERATE SERVICE BRAKE APPLICATIONS FROM 25 - 0 MPH (40 - 0 KM/H) ALLOWING 2 MINUTES BETWEEN BRAKE APPLICATIONS TO ALLOW BRAKE COMPONENTS TO COOL DOWN. OWNERS MAY PERFORM THESE BRAKE APPLICATIONS AS NECESSARY AS LONG AS IT IS DONE IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT.

IF THIS PROCEDURE DOES NOT ELIMINATE THE ABOVE MENTIONED CONDITIONS, REFER TO THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR THE RECOMMENDED BRAKE SERVICE PROCEDURES. DO NOT REPLACE BRAKE PADS UNLESS THERE IS AN OBVIOUS BRAKE PAD CONCERN.
