CAMPAIGN: PUSH ROD INTERFERENCE

SUBJECT: PUSH ROD INTERFERENCE

MODELS AND YEARS: 1995 2.2L (LN2) ENGINE 1995 CAVALIER, CORSICA BERETTA, S TRUCKS WITH CERTAIN 3.2L (LN2) ENGINES

TO: SELECT CHEVROLET GEO DEALERS

ATTENTION:

SERVICE & PARTS MANAGERS

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DECIDED THAT CERTAIN 1995 CAVALIER, CORSICA/BERETTA, S TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH 2 2L LN2 4 CYLINDER ENGINES MAY HAVE PUSH ROD THAT MAY BE IN HARD CONTACT WITH THE ANTI-ROTATION BRACKET SECURING THE ROLLER LIFTERS. IF THE PUSH ROD IS IN HARD CONTACT WITH THE LIFTER ANTI-ROTATION BRACKET, IT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY SEATED IN THE LIFTER WHICH MAY REDUCE PROPER OIL FLOW TO THE ROCKER ARMS AND AFFECT DURABILITY.

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT THE ENGINES FOR PROPER OIL FLOW AND IF FOUND RESTRICTED, REPLACE BOTH ANTI-ROTATION BRACKETS, AND THE #1 AND #3 EXHAUST PUSH RODS AND ROCKER ARMS.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THIS CAMPAIGN BY LETTER FROM CHEVROLET MOTOR DIVISION (SEE COPY OF OWNER LETTER INCLUDED WITH THIS MESSAGE).

DEALER RESPONSIBILITY

ALL UNSOLD NEW VEHICLES IN DEALERS' POSSESSION AND SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN MUST BE HELD AND INSPECTED/REPAIRED PER THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS CAMPAIGN BULLETIN BEFORE OWNERS TAKE POSSESSION OF THESE VEHICLES.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. BLOCK THE VEHICLE DRIVE WHEELS.

2. START THE ENGINE AND ALLOW THE ENGINE TO IDLE FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES IN PARK (OR IN NEUTRAL ON MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES) AND ALLOW THE OIL PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE TO STABILIZE.

3. TURN ENGINE OFF REMOVE THE ROCKER ARM COVER PLUG THE OPEN PCV VACUUM LINE AND ASSURE THAT THE SPARK PLUG WIRES ARE SECURELY INSTALLED AND LOCATED AWAY FROM THE ROCKER ARMS, VALVE SPRINGS, AND OTHER MOVING VALVETRAIN PARTS.

4. INSPECT THE EXHAUST ROCKER ARMS FOR CYLINDERS #1 AND #3 FOR THE PRESENCE OF OIL PUDDLED NEAR THE ROCKER ARM PIVOTS. IF OIL IS PRESENT PROCEED WITH STEP 5; IF OIL IS NOT PRESENT PROCEED WITH STEP 7.

5. START THE ENGINE AND ALLOW THE ENGINE TO IDLE IN PARK (OR IN NEUTRAL ON MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES). THE ENGINE MUST BE AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE TO GET ACCURATE RESULTS!

NOTICE:

DO NOT RAISE THE ENGINE RPM ABOVE IDLE!

6. VISUALLY COMPARE OIL FLOW OF THE EXHAUST ROCKER ARMS FOR CYLINDERS #1 AND/OR #3 WITH THE OTHER ROCKER ARMS. TO AID IN THIS COMPARISON, USE A RAG TO CAREFULLY SOAK OIL OFF OF THE ROCKER ARM PIVOT AREA AND THEN COMPARE THE AMOUNT OF TIME IT TAKES FOR EACH ROCKER ARM TO FILL WITH OIL AGAIN. OBSERVE CAREFULLY THE HOLE IN THE ROCKER ARM THAT FEEDS OIL FROM THE PUSHROD. OIL FLOW ON AFFECTED ENGINES IN SOME CASES MAY BE ONLY ENOUGH TO WET THE SURFACE OF THE ROCKER ARM, IN MANY CASES OIL FLOW WILL NOT OCCUR AT IDLE SPEEDS. OBSERVE THE OIL FLOW FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES AT IDLE SPEED UNLESS A LACK OF OIL IS IMMEDIATELY EVIDENT.

7. AN ENGINE WITH A DEFECTIVE VALVE LIFTER ANTI-ROTATION BRACKET IS IDENTIFIED WHEN A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN OIL FLOW IS NOTED ON THE EXHAUST ROCKER ARMS FOR CYLINDERS #1 AND #3. A CORRECTLY OPERATING ROCKER ARM WILL FILL WITH ENOUGH OIL TO COVER THE PIVOT AREA, A ROCKER AFFECTED BY A DEFECTIVE VALVE LIFTER ANTI-ROTATION BRACKET MAY FILL WITH OIL VERY SLOWLY OR, IN MOST CASES WILL NOT FILL WITH OIL AT ALL. IF OIL FLOW IS NORMAL AND IS NOT VISIBLY REDUCED ON THE EXHAUST ROCKER ARMS FOR CYLINDERS #1 AND #3 REINSTALL THE ROCKER ARM COVER AND PROCEED TO STEP 9.

8. IF A DEFECTIVE VALVE LIFTER ANTI-ROTATION BRACKET IS IDENTIFIED, REPLACE BOTH LIFTER ANTI-ROTATION BRACKETS AND #1 AND #3 EXHAUST, ROCKER ARMS, AND PUSHRODS. SEE FIGURE 16 IN THE 2.2L SECTION OF THE APPROPRIATE SHOP MANUAL.

NOTE: THESE ENGINES ARE FILLED WITH DEX-COOL" COOLANT. THIS IS A NEW EXTENDED LIFE COOLANT AND SHOULD NOT BE CONTAMINATED WITH CONVENTIONAL COOLANT. SEE BULLETIN 53-62-01 JUNE 1995 FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

9. RESTORE THE OWNERS RADIO PRESETS AFTER COMPLETING REPAIRS.

10. INSTALL THE CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
