Unwanted Entry Through End Gate (Install New Handle and Bracket)

Some customers may comment on unwanted entry through the end gate.

Install a new cover plate assembly using the procedure below.

1. Remove the trim panel.
2. Cut the tape from the rear spoiler mounting surface.
3. Remove the end gate spoiler retainers and rear end gate spoiler.
4. Remove the handle assembly mounting bolts from the tailgate.
5. Release the lock rods from the handle assembly and disconnect the electrical.



6. Remove the three screws from the lock assembly cover and discard the cover.
7. Clean the top tailgate trim mounting surface of glue residue.
8. Clean the painted side of the tailgate trim mounting surface of glue residue.
9. Install the handle assembly to the tailgate.
10. Install the lock rods to the tailgate.
11. Install the lock rods to the handle assembly and connect the electrical.
12. Install the handle assembly mounting bolts to the tailgate.



13. Install the new plate to the endgate.

Important: Make sure the two tangs are inboard of the outer panel at the bottom. Refer to the bottom two arrows in the illustration above.

14. Mark and drill two 7 mm (9/32 in) holes in the endgate at the top two retaining holes in the plate. Refer to the top two arrows in the illustration above.
15. Apply anti-corrosion material to any exposed bare metal in the drilled holes. Refer to the 2007 GM Approved Refinish Materials booklet (GM 4901 MD-2007) for specific products. To access the booklet:

•	Select the Paint Shop tab.

16. Install two push pins in the holes that were drilled to secure the plate.
17. Install the trim panel and trim panel screws to the tailgate.
18. Install the end gate spoiler and rear end gate spoiler retainers.
19. Remove the plastic from the trim tape strips.
20. Verify proper operation.
