Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 647997  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission oil pan.
  3. Remove the oil pan drain plug, if equipped.
  4. Allow the transmission fluid to drain completely.
  5. Apply a small amount of sealant GM P/N 12346004 to the treads of the drain plug.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the oil pan drain plug.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan drain plug to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  9. Remove the drain pan from under the transmission oil pan.
  10. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  11. Remove the transmission mount nuts.

  13. Remove the transmission support bolts and nuts.
  14. Remove the transmission support side bracket bolts and bracket.
  15. Remove the transmission support.

  17. Disconnect the range selector cable end (2) from the transmission range selector lever ball stud (1).

  18. Object Number: 777649  Size: SH

    Important: It is not necessary to remove the selector cable from the bracket.

  19. Remove the transmission range selector cable bracket (2) bolts and bracket from the transmission. Reposition the bracket with cable.

  21. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  22. Important: The transmission oil pan gasket is reusable. Inspect the gasket and replace as needed.

  23. Remove the oil pan and gasket.
  24. Remove the magnet from the bottom of the pan, if necessary.

  26. Remove the oil filter.
  27. Remove the filter neck seal.
  28. Clean the transmission case and the oil pan gasket surfaces with solvent.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 477602  Size: SH
  1. Install the filter neck seal.
  2. Install the oil filter.

  3. Object Number: 477599  Size: SH
  4. Install the oil pan gasket to the pan.
  5. Install the magnet into the bottom of the pan, if necessary.
  6. Install the oil pan and bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan bolts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Position the bracket with cable. Install the transmission range selector cable bracket (2) and bolts to the transmission.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the selector bracket bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  10. Connect the range selector cable end (2) to the transmission range selector lever ball stud (1).

  11. Object Number: 652595  Size: SH
  12. Install the transmission support.
  13. Install the transmission support side bracket and bolts.
  14. Install the transmission support bolts and nuts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts/nuts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).


    Object Number: 647997  Size: SH
  16. Install the transmission mount nuts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  18. Remove the transmission jack.
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
