The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

AAM 8.6 rear axle pinion head bearing and race as ordered through GMSPO is physically different from the original pinion head bearing and race.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Design change made to the pinion head bearing to improve reliability.

The new bearing features include:

  1. Steeper cone angle.
  2. Shorter, larger rollers.
  3. Puller groove.
  4. Increased cone ID.

This is a direct replacement. No additional changes to the axle assembly are required. Do not mix old and new design bearings and races.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
