Verify a fault is present.

Does the system operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Select the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Special Functions menu.
  3. Command the Brake Lamp Off.

Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF?

Go to Step 4

  1. Select Input 1 from the body control module (BCM) Data Display menu.
  2. Ensure the park brake is released.
  3. Observe the Park Brake status.

Does the scan tool display released?

Go to Step 5

Disconnect the brake fluid level switch.

Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF?

Go to Step 13

Disconnect the park brake switch.

Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF?

Go to Step 10

Disconnect the ignition switch.

Does the Brake Warning indicator turn OFF?

Go to Step 15

  1. Disconnect from the BCM, the harness connector containing the park brake switch output circuit.
  2. Test the park brake switch output circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 16

Disconnect from the electronic brake control module (EBCM), the harness connector containing the brake fluid level sensor signal circuit.

Test the brake fluid level sensor signal circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the park brake switch. Refer to Parking Brake Indicator Switch Replacement in Park Brake.

Replace the BCM. Refer to Control Module References in Computer/Integrating Systems for replacement, setup, and programming.

Replace the brake fluid level switch. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Replacement .
