J 41396 Park Lock Cable Pliers

Removal Procedure

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle .

  3. Object Number: 324906  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator from the linear shift assembly.

  5. Object Number: 104280  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the shift cable from the linear shift assembly.
  7. Remove the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .

  8. Object Number: 324874  Size: SH
  9. Disconnect the park lock cable assembly (1).

  10. Object Number: 324916  Size: SH
  11. Remove the linear shift assembly mounting screws.
  12. Remove the linear shift assembly from the steering column.
  13. In order to disassemble the linear shift assembly, refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

Installation Procedure

  1. In order to assemble the linear shift assembly, refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

  2. Object Number: 324916  Size: SH
  3. Install the linear shift assembly to the steering column.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the linear shift assembly mounting screws.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the linear shift assembly mounting screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  7. Connect the park lock cable (1) to the lock module.

  8. Object Number: 324884  Size: SH
  9. Adjust the park lock cable in the following way:
  10. 5.1. Use the shift lever clevis to put the column in the PARK position.
    5.2. Put the ignition switch in the accessory position.
    5.3. Unlock the adjuster ring (1) on the park lock cable assembly with J 41396
    5.4. Pull on the cable until the park lock latch contacts the shift lever clevis. Release the cable.
    5.5. Lock the adjuster ring (1) securely in place on the park lock cable assembly with J 41396
  11. Inspect the park lock cable using the following steps:
  12. 6.1. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF--LOCK position. The shift lever clevis should not be able to shift out of the PARK position.
    6.2. Turn the key to the RUN position and put the shift lever clevis in the NEUTRAL position.
    6.3. With the shift lever clevis in the NEUTRAL position the lock cylinder should not be able to go into the OFF--LOCK position.
    6.4. Put the shift lever clevis into the PARK position.
    6.5. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF--LOCK position and then remove the key.
  13. Install the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .

  15. Connect the shift cable to the linear shift assembly.
  16. Connect the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator to the linear shift assembly.
  17. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle .
  18. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
