Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 24402-A Glass Sealant Remover (Cold Knife)
    • J 39032 Stationary Glass Removal Tool
    • Solvent for cleaning the edge of the window (use GM Glass Cleaner P/N 1050427 or isopropyl alcohol)
    • Household cartridge-type caulking gun
    • Commercial-type utility knife used to cut around the edge of the window
    • Rubber suction grips

Caution: If broken glass falls into the defroster outlets, it can be blown into the passenger compartment and cause personal injury.

  1. Place protective coverings around the window removal area in order to perform the following steps:
  2. Apply masking tape to the painted surfaces around the windshield in order to prevent paint damage.
  3. 2.1. Remove the windshield wiper arms. Refer to Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
    2.2. Remove the antenna, if equipped. Refer to Radio Antenna Replacement .
    2.3. Remove the air inlet grille. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
    2.4. Remove the door sealing weatherstrip from the upper pinchweld flange.

  4. Remove the two screws that retain the windshield frame filler panel.
  5. Remove the frame filler panel.

  7. Remove the windshield reveal molding.
  8. 5.1. Grasp the lower corner of the windshield reveal molding by hand and slowly pull the reveal molding away from the windshield.
    5.2.  If the windshield reveal molding will not release, use a utility knife in order to cut around the windshield in order to remove the windshield reveal molding.
    5.3. The windshield reveal molding fills the cavities between the body and windshield and can not be reused if stretched or damaged.

  9. Remove the lower windshield supports.

  10. Object Number: 264800  Size: SH

    Important: Keep the cutting edge of the tool against the windshield when removing. This will allow the urethane adhesive to be separated from the windshield.

  11. Use the J 24402-A and J 39032 to remove the windshield.

  13. Remove the windshield from the vehicle with the aid of an assistant.
  14. The following components may reveal the causes of a broken windshield:
  15. • The flange of the windshield opening
    • The windshield reveal molding
    • The windshield
  16. Look for any of the following problems in order to help prevent future breakage of the windshield:
  17. • High weld
    • Solder spots
    • Hardened spot weld sealer
    • Any other obstruction or irregularity in the pinchweld flange.
  18. Inspect the windshield to be installed. Ensure that the windshield does not have any chipped edges.
  19. Chipped edges can be sanded lightly to restore a smooth edge to the window and minimizing concentrations of pressure that cause breakage.

  20. Remove no more of the windshield urethane adhesive than necessary in order to maintain the original shape. This will ensure the proper clearance between the windshield and the pinchweld flange of the opening.
  21. Clean around the edge of the inside surface of the windshield with one of the following cleaners:
  22. • GM Glass Cleaner P/N 1050427
    • A clean isopropyl alcohol dampened cloth

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the lower windshield supports.
  2. Install the spacers and the VIN plate filler strip.

  3. Object Number: 326808  Size: SH
  4. With the aid of an assistant, dry fit the windshield in the opening in order to determine the correct way to position the windshield in the opening.
  5. Use masking tape in order to mark the location of the windshield in the opening.
  6. Slit the masking tape at the top edge of the windshield.
  7. Remove the windshield from the opening.
  8. Place the windshield inside up on a clean, protected surface.
  9. Important: If corrosion of the pinchweld flange is present, or if sheet metal repairs or replacements are required, the pinchweld flange must be refinished in order to present a clean primer only surface.

  10. If paint repairs are required, mask the flange bonding area prior to applying the color coat in order to provide a clean primer only surface.
  11. If you are performing the extended method of installation, perform the following steps:
  12. 9.1. Shake pinchweld number 3 (black) well.
    9.2. Use masking tape in order to mark the location of the windshield in the opening.

  13. After repairing the opening as indicated, perform the following steps:
  14. Shake pinchweld primer number 3 (black) well.
  15. Allow the primer to dry for approximately 10 minutes.

  16. Object Number: 245290  Size: SH
  17. Use a new dauber in order to apply the primer to the primed surface of the flange in the bonding area.
  18. Allow the primer to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
  19. If you reuse the original windshield, use a utility knife in order to remove any existing urethane adhesive from the windshield edge and surface.
  20. Install the windshield reveal molding to the top edge of the windshield if you use the original windshield reveal molding (or new production type windshield reveal molding).
  21. Install the new acoustic strip if damaged.

  23. If you use the extended method, perform the following steps:
  24. 18.1. Apply a dam material, such as Norton Windshield Dam Replacement or equivalent to approximately 12 mm (1/2-5/8 in) from the outer edge of the window.
    18.2. Apply the dam material around the entire perimeter of the windshield in order to control urethane squeeze out.
    18.3. Use a new dauber in order to apply glass prep number 1 (clear) approximately 10-16 mm (3/8-5/8 in) around the entire perimeter of the inner surface.

    Important: Use care when applying the windshield prep number 1 (clear) in order to prevent the windshield prep from running into the vision area of the windshield. This primer dries almost instantly, but may stain the viewing area of the windshield if not applied evenly.

  25. Apply windshield prep number 1 (clear):
  26. 19.1. Use a new dauber in order to apply glass prep number 1 (clear) approximately 10-16 mm (3/8-5/8 in) around the entire perimeter of the inner surface.
    19.2. Apply glass prep number 1 (clear) to any exposed edges of the window.
    19.3. Wipe the area dry with a clean cloth.
  27. Shake windshield primer number 2 (black) well.

  29. Use a new dauber in order to apply the primer to the same areas that windshield prep number 1 (clear) was applied to.
  30. Allow the primer to dry for approximately 6-10 minutes.

  31. Object Number: 311786  Size: MH

    Important: In order to properly cure the urethane, observe the following:

       • Allow the vehicle to remain at room temperature (22°C or 72°F) at 30 percent relative humidity for a minimum of 6 hours.
            Partially lower a door window in order to prevent pressure buildups when closing doors before the urethane adhesive cures.
       • Do not drive the vehicle until the urethane adhesive is cured (minimum of 6 hours at room temperature).
       • Do not use compressed air in order to dry the urethane adhesive.

  32. If you use the short method, cut the tip of the applicator nozzle in order to provide a bead of 6 mm (1/4 in) in diameter.
  33. If you use the extended method, cut the applicator nozzle in order to provide a bead of approximately 14.5 mm (0.57 in) in diameter.

  34. Object Number: 245315  Size: SH
  35. Apply a smooth, continuous bead of urethane adhesive in (1) around the edge of the windshield (3) where the primer was applied.
  36. • When using the short method, apply the urethane adhesive to the existing bead of urethane adhesive on the body.
    • When using the extended method, use the edge of the windshield or the inside edge of the windshield reveal molding (in certain cases) as a guide for the nozzle in order to apply the urethane adhesive to the inner surface of the windshield.
  37. Use rubber suction cups, along with the aid of a helper, in order to install the windshield into the opening.

  39. Place the windshield on the lower supports.
  40. Align the tape lines on the windshield and the body pillar.
  41. Press the windshield firmly into place.
  42. Tape the windshield to the body in order to minimize movement.
  43. Clean up any excess urethane that may have squeezed out from the body.
  44. Use a soft spray in order to watertest the windshield immediately.
  45. Warm or hot water is preferred in order to accelerate the cure of the adhesive. Do not direct a hard stream of high pressure at the fresh urethane adhesive.

  46. Inspect the windshield for leaks. If any leaks are found, use a plastic paddle in order to apply extra urethane adhesive at the leak point. Retest the windshield for leaks.
  47. Install the windshield reveal molding.

  48. Object Number: 301427  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  49. Install the windshield side reveal molding screws.
  50. Tighten
    Tighten the windshield side reveal screws to 2 N·m(18 lb in).

  51. Install the windshield frame filler panel with two screws.
  52. Tighten
    Tighten the windshield frame filler panel screws to 2 N·m(18 lb in).

  53. Install the door sealing weatherstrip to the upper pinchweld flange.
  54. Install the air inlet grille. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  55. Install the antenna, if equipped. Radio Antenna Replacement .
  56. Install the windshield wiper arms. Refer to Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement in Wiper/Washer System.
  57. Remove the tape from the painted surfaces.
