Cruise Control Switch Assembly

The cruise control switch assembly is comprised of the following 4 switches:

    • The ON/OFF switch
    • The RES/ACCEL switch
    • The SET/COAST switch
    • The CANCEL switch (Oldsmobile only)

The ON/OFF switch is located on the left side of the steering wheel. The RESUME/ACCEL switch is mounted on the right side of the steering wheel. The SET/COAST switch is mounted in the center of the steering wheel.

The switches are not independent of each other. Service the switches as 1 assembly. The OFF/ON switch has 2 positions. This switch turns the cruise control system on and off. A small indicator lamp on the switch illuminates when the switch is in the ON position.

Set/Coast Switch

The cruise control SET/COAST switch is located in the steering wheel. The cruise control SET/COAST switch has the following 2 positions:

    • Normal
    • Depressed

Set Position

When you depress and then release the switch, the cruise speed will be set at the particular speed the vehicle was at when the switch was released. Ensure that the vehicle speed exceeds the low speed lockout point. Ensure that the OFF/ON switch is in the ON position. The vehicle cruise speed will be within 0.62 km/h (1 mph) of the actual speed when you engage the switch, and after the speed has stabilized. You may not set the cruise with the RESUME button.

The system will cruise until any one of the following actions occurs:

    • The OFF/ON switch is depressed.
    • The ignition switch is turned off.
    • The SET/COAST switch is pushed in and held.

Coast Position

With the switch fully depressed, you may raise or lower the control speed. In order to increase the control speed, complete the following steps:

  1. Accelerate to a new speed.
  2. Fully depress the switch.
  3. The controller releases the previously set speed.

  4. Once you release the switch, the new speed sets.

Pushing the brake pedal releases the cruise control, but not the cruise capability.

You may also set an increased control speed by using the RESUME/ACCEL switch as described later in this section.

In order to decrease control speed, hold the switch in the depressed position. This action disengages the cruise control and allows the throttle to return to the idle position. When the vehicle has slowed to the desired cruise speed, release the switch in order to re-engage the system.

Tap-Down Position

To execute the tap-down function, verify that the cruise is engaged and operating. In order to tap-down, complete the following steps:

  1. Quickly press the SET/COAST button to the depressed position.
  2. Quickly release the button (or tap the button).

Do not hold the button in the depressed position or the system will revert to the coast mode.

The tap-down function allows you to decrease the cruise speed by increments of 0.62 km/h (1 mph) (1 tap equals 1 mph decrease). The system may tap-down until the system reaches the low speed lockout of 40 km/h (25 mph). The cruise will become inoperative at this point.

Resume/Accel Switch

The cruise control RESUME/ACCEL switch is located on the right side of the steering wheel.

The RESUME/ACCEL switch has the following 2 positions:

    • Normal
    • Depressed

Resume Position

Important: The RESUME position will not function unless the SET button has been previously set on the current ignition cycle.

The resume switch returns the cruise control operation to the last speed setting by momentarily depressing the switch after braking. If you hold the switch in the RESUME/ACCEL position for more than 1 second, the system reverts to the ACCEL mode.

Accel Position

In order to use the ACCEL mode, ensure that the cruise OFF/ON switch is in the ON position. Ensure that the vehicle is above the low speed lockout of approximately 40 km/h (25 mph). In order to accelerate the vehicle, press the RESUME switch. Hold the RESUME switch until the vehicle reaches the desired speed. The speed the vehicle has accelerated to becomes the new cruise speed when the RESUME/ACCEL switch is released.

Tap-Up Position

Important: In order to keep the vehicle under control, and to prevent possible vehicle damage, do not use the cruise control if the following conditions exist:

   • Slippery roads
   • Winding roads
   • Heavy volume or varying volume traffic

In order to tap-up the vehicle speed, use the RESUME/ACCEL switch. Ensure that the cruise is engaged and operating. In order to tap-up, complete the following steps:

  1. Quickly press the RESUME/ACCEL switch down.
  2. Quickly release the switch (or tap the switch).

The system will revert to the ACCEL mode if you hold the switch in the RESUME/ACCEL position. The tap-up allows you to increase the cruise speed by 0.62 km/h (1 mph) increments (1 tap equals 1 mph increase). Depress the accelerator at any time in order to override the cruise system. Release the accelerator in order to return the vehicle to the previously set cruise speed.
