J 36011 Spark Plug Removal Tool

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Remove the accelerator cable from the hold down clip.
  4. Remove the cruise control cable, if applicable.

  6. Remove the bolt from the fuel line retaining clip .

  7. Object Number: 388402  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the 11 pin harness connector for the ignition control module (ICM) .

  10. Remove the bolts from the ignition coil and the ICM assembly-to-camshaft housing .

    Notice: Spark plug boots often adhere to the spark plugs. Use tool J 36011 in order to remove by first twisting and then pulling upward on retainers. Reinstall the boots and the retainers on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals. The boots and the retainers must be in place on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals prior to the ignition coil and the electronic ignition control module assembly installation or ignition control system damage may result.

  12. Remove the ignition coil and ICM assembly from the engine.

  14. Remove the screws that retain the housing to the cover.

  16. Disconnect the coil harness connector from the ICM.
  17. Important: When removing the housing from the cover, make sure the ground strap stays in place.

  18. Remove the housing from the cover.

  20. Remove the screws that retain the ICM to the cover.

  22. Remove the ICM from the cover.

Installation Procedure

Important:  DO NOT wipe grease from the module or coil if the same module is to be replaced. If a new module is to be installed, a package of silicone grease will be included with the module . Spread the grease on the metal face of the module and on the cover where the module seats. This grease is necessary for module cooling.

  1. Install the ICM to the cover.

  2. Object Number: 388416  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the screws that retain the ICM to the cover.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  5. Install the ground strap, if necessary.

  7. Connect the ignition coils connector to the ICM.
  8. Important: When installing the housing to the cover make sure the ground strap stays in place.

  9. Install the housing to the cover.

  10. Object Number: 388406  Size: SH
  11. Install the screws that retain the housing to the cover.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the screws 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  13. Install the spark plug boots and the retainers to the housing, if necessary.

  15. Install the ICM assembly to the engine while carefully aligning the spark boots to the spark plug terminals.

    Important: The ICM cover bolts must be installed using isolator washers with the rubber side facing down.

  17. Install the bolts that retain the ICM assembly to the camshaft housing after coating the bolt threads with LOCTITE®, or equivalent.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  19. Connect the ICM 11 pin harness connector.

  21. Install the bolt to the fuel line retainer clip .

  23. Install the accelerator cable into the hold down clip.
  24. Install the cruise control cable, if applicable.
