    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .
  3. Drain the fuel tanks. Refer to Fuel Tank Draining .
  4. Remove the fuel tanks. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement - Left Side and Fuel Tank Replacement - Right Side .
  5. Remove the fuel tank modules. Refer to Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement - Left Side and Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement - Right Side .
  6. Inspect the left fuel tank module. Replace a contaminated strainer for the left fuel tank module.
  7. Inspect the left fuel tank module fuel pump and fuel pump inlet for debris. Replace the left fuel tank module assembly if you find debris in the fuel pump inlet.
  8. Inspect the right fuel tank module strainer. Replace the right fuel tank module assembly if you find a contaminated strainer. The right fuel tank module strainer is not serviced separately.
  9. Important: When flushing the fuel tanks, handle the fuel and water mixture as a hazardous material. Handle the fuel and water mixture in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

  10. Flush the fuel tanks with hot water.
  11. Pour the water out of the fuel tank module assembly openings. Rock the tanks to be sure that removal of the water from the tanks is complete.
  12. Install the fuel tank module assemblies to the fuel tanks. Refer to Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement - Left Side and Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement - Right Side .
  13. Disconnect the fuel feed hose/pipe from the fuel rail. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  14. Use compressed air in order to apply air pressure to the fuel lines in the opposite direction from the normal fuel flow.
  15. Remove the fuel injectors and fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Injector and Fuel Rail Replacement .
  16. Clean and inspect the fuel injectors and fuel rail.
  17. Install the fuel injectors and fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Injector and Fuel Rail Replacement .
  18. Connect the fuel feed hose/pipe to the fuel rail. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
  19. Install the fuel tanks. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement - Left Side and Fuel Tank Replacement - Right Side .
  20. Refill the fuel system.
  21. Install the fuel filler cap.
  22. Connect the negative battery cable.
  23. Perform the following procedure in order to inspect for leaks:
  24. 22.1. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds.
    22.2. Turn the ignition switch OFF for 10 seconds.
    22.3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    22.4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  25. Program the transmitters. Refer to Transmitter Programming .
