J 42640 Steering Column Lock Pin

Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the steering wheel far enough to the left to gain access to the upper to lower intermediate shaft bolts.
  2. Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  3. Insert J 42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column. This will maintain the correct orientation.

  4. Object Number: 908202  Size: SH
  5. Remove the upper to lower intermediate shaft bolts.
  6. Remove the lower coupling shield.

  7. Object Number: 908216  Size: SH
  8. Remove the lower coupling pinch bolt.
  9. Remove the lower coupling from the steering gear.
  10. Slide the lower intermediate shaft from the upper intermediate shaft.
  11. Remove the lower intermediate shaft from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 908216  Size: SH
  1. Slide the lower intermediate shaft over the upper intermediate shaft.
  2. Connect the lower intermediate shaft coupler to the steering gear.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the lower coupling pinch bolt into the lower coupling.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  6. Install the lower to upper intermediate shafts retaining bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  8. Install the lower steering coupling shield.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the lower steering coupling shield screw to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).
